Red Velvet Lovers UNITE!!! 10 stars

Let me start by saying OMG! I LOVED this cookbook! It simply blew me away. First – you have to LOVE red velvet to love this cookbook (obviously) and second – you need to NOT be worried about red food coloring! Ha! ;)

This book blew me away with its recipes, photographs and red velvet transformations! Every single recipe is red velvet “enhanced” and let me say – done beautifully!

The book is divided into eight categories – The Basics, Quick Breads and Breakfast Treats, Cakes and Cupcakes, Cookies, Brownies and Bars, Breads, Ice Cream and Frozen Dessert and Other Indulgences. I have several favorites from each section. I actually think there are only four or five recipes that I don’t have marked… and those will probably sound good tomorrow! ;)

I may actually start and just bake my way through the book. (I was just talking about “baking / cooking though a cookbook” in The Cookbook Junkies Facebook group – and not that many people have actually done it…) Anyways some of my favorite recipes are…

“The Ultimate Red Velvet Cake” (page 11 – and believe me – it is THE ultimate!), “Boiled Frosting” (page 16 – which reminds me of an old recipe my Grandma Barbra used to make), “White Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting” (page 17 – and my FAVORITE!), “Glazed Fried Donuts” (page 22), “Red Velvet Waffles” (page 28), “Breakfast Biscuits with Chocolate Gravy” (page 36), “Red Velvet Cheesecake” (page 42), “Icebox Cake” (page 50), “Molten Lava Cakes” (page 53), “Red Velvet Snowballs” (page 58), “Gooey Butter Cookies” (page 62), “Cream Cheese Thumbprints” (page 71), “Seven-Layer Bars” (page 82), “Red Velvet Bread” (page 87 – YES! Bread!), “Frozen Cheesecake Pie” (page 100), “Red Velvet Truffles” (page 106), “Red Velvet Éclairs” (page 110) and “Red Velvet ‘Twinkies’” (page 120 – which would be incredible deep fried and drizzled in white chocolate…)

All in all – this cookbook will be having a permanent place in my stack of “favorite cookbooks”! I can’t express how much I love this cookbook – and yes – I’m obsessed with anything red velvet. I’m not really sure where the love came from – perhaps from (much like the author of this cookbook) from the movie “Steel Magnolia’s” which I seen when I was younger – huge Dolly Parton fan!

I highly recommend this cookbook to all of my fellow RED VELVET LOVERS!

I was so excited when this book arrived! My family loves all things red velvet and this book does not disappoint! There are so many creative recipes in here that I never would have thought to try. The red velvet biscuits with chocolate gravy are AMAZING and I can't wait to try the donuts.

Not My Favorite Cookbook

I am basing my review of RED VELVET LOVER’S COOKBOOK on one recipe, Red Velvet Bundt Cake. I just baked it. It is a far cry from what I want in anything red velvet. I baked it in a rose bundt pan so it came out perfect and beautiful. But the good times stop there. I have baked dozens of bundt and pound cakes over the years so it must be the recipe and not the baker.. The icing, always an important element of anything red velvet, should at the very least be doubled. The cake was dry and pretty much tasteless when just out of the oven although it got a little tastier in a day or so but not much. I substituted White Lily flour, since some Red Velvet wizards say that we must always use that brand since it should produce a softer cake. (I always use White Lily when I am baking the real thing.) I increased the eggs from three to four in an effort to make the cake moister to no avail. I then checked out a red velvet bundt cake on the internet that looks promising. It has three cups sugar (this one has only 2 1/3 cups) and 6 eggs and 3 to 4 tablespoons of cocoa powder. and uses vegetable oil instead of butter, and a little vinegar I suspect that would make a much tastier cake than this recipe. Finally although the author lists vanilla flavor in the ingredients for the cake, she does not tell you when and where to add the vanilla so you are on your own here. That of course is the least of things wrong with the recipe.

On the positive side, the cookbook certainly is well laid out and must have every red velvet recipe imaginable. The exact number, according to the book cover, is over 50. They are as exotic as red velvet cheesecake, red velvet donuts, red velvet eclairs and red velvet breakfast biscuits with chocolate gravy. The photographs of the finished desserts are beautiful. We can hope that this bundt cake recipe is the only bad apple in the basket. I have found bakers of red velvet cakes often to be as vain about having the definitive recipe for this much-loved dessert—and may not be willing to share the recipe-- as are cooks with their recipes for fried chicken or barbecue sauce. Given my unpleasant experience with this recipe and since I have a recipe for red velvet cake that has proven to be a winner and markedly different from the one the author provides, I am not inclined to try her recipe or any other recipe from the collection for that matter.

About the Author

 

Linda Jeffries holds a master's degree in TESOL from Boston University. She has taught reading, writing ans ESL/EFL at Boston College, Boston University, the Harvard University Summer ESL Program, the University of Opole, Poland, and the University of Bologna, Italy. She lives in Italy, near Bologna, and teaches academic reading and writing at the University of Modena.

 

Bea Mikulecky holds a master's degree in TESOL and a doctorate in Applied Psycholinguistics from Boston University. In addition to teaching reading, writing, and ESL, she has worked as a teacher trainer in the Harvard University Summer ESL Program, in the Simmons College MATESL Program, and in Moscow, Russia. She is the author of A Short Course in Teaching Reading Skills.

I've been teaching gymnastics for 20 years. I'd acquired a copy of Jerry's earlier book, "Biomechanics of Women's Gymnastics" and found it to contain clear descriptions of how certain skills should be performed, and from those descriptions constructed the mental models I've used to teach these skills. I find that "Championship Gymnastics" does an amazing job of explaining "why" a skill works - a key element in upgrading my mental models and my athletes' performance. By page 65, I decided I'd already gotten my money's worth.

A "Must-Read" for every Gymnastics Coach

Dr. Jerry George is one of the finest gymnastics technicians and teachers in the world. In his book Championship Gymnastics, he breaks down movement technique into key elements that allow the gymnast to go from basic to elite movements successfully. Using this book every coach will get a clear picture of what they need to teach, and what every gymnast needs to understand to perform their best. The detailed illustrations give the teacher, coach, or gymnast a clear picture of the "key" parts of a gymnastics movement (the secret to the recipe) which is often missing. This book is a must-read for anyone involved in gymnastics.

As a gymnastics coach myself for 45 years, from beginners to Olympicv level, I feel Championship Gymnastics is the best "gymnastics teaching" book I've ever read.

Another Brilliant Work from Dr Gerald George... This book is well written, informative, and a necessity for all gymnastics coaches. It discusses theory and practical application. The information can be used immediately. The illustrations are very clear and accurate. I have been coaching since 1978 and have produced many successful gymnasts. I am also a gymnastics author and have educated thousands of gymnastics coaches, gymnasts, physical education teachers, and fitness experts. Other than my gymnastics books and training programs, Championship Gymnastics is the ONLY gymnastics book that I would highly recommend for gymnastics coaches.

Wheat Grass is an outstanding Heb for Healing

I read the first part of the book about Ann Wigdome's life, which is quite interesting and how she heale3d herself after breaking bones, having gangrene set in, etc. I do not know if she is still alive, but it'd be interesting to sit down and talk with her about health issues. She had a very tough life growing up in Lithuania with her parents abandoning her to her grandmother, which turned out quite well, except for the effects of World War II with Germans and Russians marauding and destroying the countryside.It is a miracle that Ann made it to the United States, where she was able to get a very high education in nutrition and many other areas.

The subject of wheat grass and other seeds and grasses is covered very heavily, as well as the beneficial effects of eating the grass and/or drinking its chlorophyll. Wheat is THE supreme grass for healing a body.

I loved reading this book. It got a bit detailed on health issues and solutions toward the end of the book. This is a very difficult book to find. I am glad I've gotten one hard back and one paperback copy, which I have lent out to a friend and a relative. This is one book which needs a reprint.

I love this book and the woman who lived the life she describes in her book. My hat is off to Ann Wigdome, a seeker of truth and a true daughter of God.

This memoir of Ann Wigmore's I found so fascinating that I couldn't put it down once I started. I liked the way she put it together. She was an amazing woman.

WONDERFUL BOOK

This book is an Ann Wigmore autobiography. If you like Ann Wigmore and her contribution to the world of natural healing you will love this book. It's one of my favorite books. I was especially fascinated by her narration of her birth and childhood in pre-industrial, pre-tech Europe. Such a different time from our modern life. Three thumbs up!

About the Author
Jim Clover is an Adjunct Professor at California State University, San Bernardino and Retired teacher at Riverside County of Education Career Technical Program for 20 years. Coordinator Riverside Medical Clinic's Sports Clinic and SPORT Foundation, Mr. Clover coordinates sports medicine services for 40 schools in Southern California. He invented the Trainer's Angel (a cutting tool to remove football helmets in emergencies) and received the NATA's Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 2004. In addition to a holding a Master's Degree in Education, he is an NATA Certified Athletic Trainer, Physical Therapy Assistant, and NASM Corrective Exercises Specialist.

We got this book as a gift for our baby and he loved it . Can't blame him the book has 28 colorful pictures ,the animal's name in big font ,and some questions in some pages with extra tiny pictures too. I'll definitely recommend it to my friends

The animals look very strange..

This book has nice bright and bold pictures and the book itself is very durable. However, the drawings of the animals are a bit off.. Who has ever seen a blue, yellow, and red bumble bee? It's almost as if the artist has never seen these animals before.. Thankfully I got this cheaper somewhere else.

We purchased our first Baby's First Library: Farm from Marshall, and my 10 month old baby girl love flipping the pages and look at the pictures. However, Marshall only had that one, so we bought the rest of the Baby's First Library books from amazon.

Gave me a lot to think about . . .

and I've read his first two books. A thoughtful progression from Grain Brain and Brain Maker, and built on the essential principals of these previous works. Others can comment about the nuts and bolts advice of diet, exercise, and sleep. I am contemplating how I need to adjust my life to handle stress better, on account of the revelation in this book of Dr. Perlmutter's personal health crisis, which landed him in the hospital. He shares what happened in his life that may have contributed to this event, and of the power of love and compassion to heal. The story is captivating, and profound. It made me think - think of my whole life - am I in a place where I can truly love and minister to others, and is there needless stress I must be rid of? Because our health depends on these things as well as diet, exercise, and proper sleep. Thanks, Dr. Perlmutter, for sharing more personally in the book, as well as for all the updated information! May the power of gratitude to you be evident in this review!

You Are The Most Important Person In The World

The purpose of THE GRAIN BRAIN WHOLE LIFE PLAN is to follow up on the author's prior best-seller, and show the reader how to put the doctor's ideas into practice. That is, this is a practical book--not so much a theory book as his prior book: "The main purpose of this book is to help you put my ideas into practice in the real world and to show you that living your best life is about much more than what you put in your mouth." Additionally, Dr. Perlmutter includes some updated information on more ways of "eating more fat and fiber, consuming fewer carbs and protein, evicting gluten forever, and catering to your intestinal flora."

Here's how the book is laid out: Part I of the book reviews, for those new to his program, the concepts: "Part I explains the what, why, and how of the program. I’ll detail the ground rules, present new data, and offer a 3-step framework that will help you execute my recommendations." Part II provides the details on how to use his program, and which foods to eat. Part III includes "final tips and reminders," plus snack suggestions, shopping lists, and also the 14-day meal plan with recipes.

To start, the doctor sets a backdrop to review WHY this plan is needed. Why do Americans need to change at all? The author explains the sad state of American health. In particular, a huge number of people suffer from some sort of mental illness: "The United States is among the ten wealthiest Western nations where death from brain disease, most commonly dementia, has skyrocketed over the past twenty years. . . 5.4 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and that number is predicted to double by the year 2030!"

For those not familiar with the author's prior book explaining his plan, the doctor gives an overview of the diet. It's called a "ketogenic" diet, which means that 80 to 90 percent of calories from fat, and the rest from fibrous carbohydrates and high-quality protein. Instead of meals having a big protein-packed entree and small side dishes, this plan calls quite a drastic change. The main entrée is mostly "fibrous, colorful, nutrient-dense whole fruits and vegetables that grow above ground, with protein as a side dish." Other key features of the plan are: low-carb, higher fat and fiber, avoidance of gluten and sugar, and lots of "the incredible egg."

Besides just diet, the author provides a lot of tips on exercise. I actually thought the exercise tips were just as good as the diet tips. The doctor cites studies showing huge reduction in Alzheimer's for those at high levels of exercise: "Those at the highest level of exercise activity experienced an incredible reduction of risk for Alzheimer’s of 50 percent when compared to those who were more sedentary." I thought the best exercise tip was this: "Establish An Exercise Routine You Can Sustain." Here's another interesting point. The doctor notes that the problem people have with exercise is not just starting it, but continuing it.

The latter part of the book contains "Final Reminders." For example, "Drink Water Throughout the Day," and "Find a Partner" who shares your goals. In terms of eating, the author reminds us to "Make Vegetables Your Centerpiece. . . . A full three-quarters of your plate should be filled with fibrous, colorful, nutrient-dense whole vegetables that grow above ground."

Since I love to eat sweets (especially chocolate!), I was pleasantly surprised to see lots of healthy snack ideas. He suggests snacks such as "a handful of raw nuts, olives, and/ or seeds (no peanuts), a few squares of dark chocolate (anything above 70 percent cacao) • chopped raw vegetables, or hard-boiled eggs.

I was especially happy to see protein bars on the list of snacks. From the author's recipe online, here are the secret ingredients for a recommended protein bar:
• 2C almonds – soaked overnight
• 2 tbsp. ground flax seeds
• 1/2C shredded coconut
• 1/2C nut butter or coconut butter
• 1/2 tsp. sea salt
• 1/2C pastured butter or coconut oil or a blend of the two (melted)
• 1 tsp. vanilla
• Stevia, to taste (optional)
• Cacao chips (chopped, optional)

Besides the snacks, I just had to try one of the desserts listed. So I made the dessert with ricotta cheese, berries, and sliced almonds. It's simple to make--even I was able to do it.

All in all, I found THE GRAIN BRAIN WHOLE LIFE PLAN to be a useful, and encouraging book. The book is easy to read and nicely laid out. From similar books, I was already aware of many of the doctor's ideas, but it was good to have them reinforced. There is a useful Bibliography at the end, containing helpful reference information; for example, links to the Alzheimer’s Association.

This Book is About Eating High Fat Low Carb

Interesting that he is now promoting no grains at all. Previous books were mostly get off gluten.. I guess baby steps. This book is also about high fat low carb, which I've been trying to adapt to. Its very difficult for me because I love sugar. I am mostly off grains. I'm trying to step down slowly off all sugars. The recipes look good. Four stars because he left out the index in the Kindle version :-\ If you love indexes, then you won't like that about this book. I appreciate the exercise section as I enjoy exercise.
