Had potential but just fell short for me

It's not easy for me to write a negative review. As a creative in a different arena, I understand how much goes into expressing yourself in such a public way, you are laying yourself bare for all to see and comment on, and I appreciate the courage that takes. Having said that, we all look for different things in our books and this is just my opinion, which goes against many of the reviews on here.

Firstly, what I liked about this book.
I liked the premise of the story, the way the author wove the main characters stories together. It was set up well, and opened up opportunities for emotional attachment and angst. I also could envisage the setting and atmosphere of the town.I liked the main characters friendship groups and what they added to the story and I can see there is potential for the author to continue this series with their stories.

Sadly, as the story went on I felt bogged down by too much inner dialogue, particularly from the heroine, her 'rules', and her manner, which caused me to disconnect from her as the story progressed. She began to annoy me with her flip flopping of emotions and poor decision making. I felt some of it was there just to create unnecessary angst and ended up making her look weak and immature. I understood how her past had effected her but, in the end I lost interest in her HEA.

Grey, on the other hand, I felt more of a connection to than Avery, but still missed the total connection that I look for. I thought he was open and honest. He showed his vulnerability, even when Avery was not willing to do the same. I had to wonder though, if attraction and lust would be enough to overcome the obstacles they had in the beginning, knowing what they did and what it meant for their budding relationship. I'm not sure I would have pursued a relationship in that situation until the issue between us was somewhat more resolved.

Overall, this book had potential but it just fell short for me. I thought that some of the situations were added or drawn out unnecessarily. Some just took the focus away from their developing relationship and the ability for the reader to form a strong bond with the main characters. The ending felt rushed and Grey forgave Avery far to quickly for my liking. I didn't want him to drag it out, but he did a complete 180 in the space of 5 minutes that I felt was unrealistic. And then the book ended. I would have liked an epilogue. And I would have liked someone to stand up to Avery's overbearing father. It just felt unfinished to me.

This was an interesting twist as far as the plot goes. If anyone, other than the hero, had one ounce of maturity, it might have gone somewhere. But instead we had the hapless brother, the bully father, the invisible mother, the playboy best friend, the repentant ex, the immature best friend, and finally a heroine who blew in the wind. Story was slow, the romance inconceivable and too many annoying sideline characters

Challenges, obstacles and loyalty...

Grey Lowell runs a backcountry skiing expedition company called Backtrax in the San Juan mountains of Colorado. He lives in the small town of Sterling Canyon and loves grape lollipops.

He sees a woman across a room and nicknames her Bambi, little realizing what an impact this woman will have on his life. Right after seeing (and becoming interested in this woman), Grey is hit and injured by a drunk driver.

When he goes in for PT, he finds out that Avery Randall aka Bambi is his occupational physical therapist - and also the sister of the drunk driver.

I liked the locale - the southwestern part of Colorado is one of my favorite places. In fact, we just got back from vacation there so I was really able to visualize the area as I was reading about it.

Grey is almost too good to be true. And Avery definitely has some issues. Questions are raised about give and take in relationships and also about loyalty - to your family and to your significant other.

But I liked the story and the romance. The ending was a bit rushed and I would have like an epilogue for this story. I think it is the first story in a Sterling Canyon series, though, so I imagine there will be more about the pair in future books.

I wonder how this book works for people who know very little about metabolism

I was introduced to the At a Glance series by reading Immunology at a Glance. I had never comprehended immunology -- the immune system --- in any kind of comprehensive way; it's complicated and the Book is always some five hundred page tome. I read every page of Immunology at a Glance and I can say that I'm pretty sure that I got it. So later I bought Metabolism at a Glance, even though I don't need any introduction or any help with intermediary metabolism. So I was actually disappointed with the At a Glance metabolism book, BUT, I have a feeling that the situation would be entirely different for a person who desperately needs an introduction to this intricate, highly conceptual subject. Let me put it this way --- I had always told people who ask, that pathways of metabolism are akin to looking at a map of the subway, say the New York City subway. I even have such a map, framed, and it hangs next to the eight foot by three foot Biochemical Pathways chart in my hallway. So here, in the Metabolism at a Glance book, is a portion of the map of the London Tube!!! Must be a good book, eh? Indeed, it is. I can tell. I hope it elucidates the subject for you, if you are a beginner; a student; or if you have always found metabolism to be hard to follow, this will help.

Amazing Resource for Grad Students Too

I bought "Metabolism at a Glance" 3 weeks ago off amazon.com because I was doing poorly in my inborn errors of metabolism class for grad school. I did not have a very clear understanding of biochemistry from my undergraduate courses, but have learned about many of the pathways. I have never loved a textbook as much as I do, Metabolism at a Glance. ​I love the choice to make the book large so that pathways are clear. I love the simple explanations of metabolic disorders that include treatment and the graphics on the pathway and enzymes highlighted in red. And most of all I love the author's metaphor of thinking of the pathways like a subway map. I was getting too caught up in trying to remember all of the enzymes and connecting pathways. Now, I am focusing on which enzymes I need to know and it makes so much more sense and is actually interesting to learn about.

This is a brief, yet comprehensive book on metabolism! As a genetic counseling graduate student it has been a wonderful resource to supplement (read replace) my huge 400 page book on inborn errors of metabolism. My grades have significantly improved and my time spent studying has decreased since using this book.

Excellent, Concise, and Thorough!

This large format book reveiws basic metabolism in an easy to understand manner. Specific segments of the metabolic pathway are summarized within two pages. Each face-page gives an overview of the entire metabolic pathway, with an outline of the specific topic discussed within that section. Far easier to comprehend than the metabolic pathways as described in those well known Biochemistry tomes, where the entire metabolic pathway is spread over 100 or so pages!

Not bad. Worth the price.

Good book with a lot of details that make it better than most about PPC marketing. I would recommend it because it allows you to get your feet wet without losing your shirt to the big PPC search engines. Could still use more info but overall, I'm happy with my purchase as it has brought me closer to trying PPC than other books I've read. Don't let this be the only one you read, but make it one of several.

Superb writing, accessible and insightful

This is unquestionably the best quality book in a field crowded with poseurs and worse. See particularly the essays by Wilhelm & Kapell, John Shelton Lawrence, Flannery-Dailey & Wagner, and Mizelle & Baker. Accessibly written, enlightening, intellectually stimulating, with touches of humor that delight and intrigue, this book is worth every penny. The primary editor, Kapell, along with the highly competent Dr. Doty, have selected papers which are reflexive, more than capably developed, and multi-faceted in their approaches to the Matrix franchise. Enjoy this literate and worthy book!

Jacking In to the Matrix Franchise is the red pill that makes us understand the world of the Matrix in ways we could not while we were immersed in it, since the volume's essays serve as a comprehensive look into the Matrix franchise, not just the film trilogy composed by The Matrix, The Matrix: Reloaded, and The Matrix: Revolutions. For the Matrix directors, Andy and Larry Wachowski, orchestrated an array of artistic endeavors, including a collection of short anime stories entitled The Animatrix, the video game Enter The Matrix and the The Matrix comics as alternative texts that provide background or side narratives to Reloaded and Revolutions. In the Fall of 2004, the Matrix saga will continue in the form of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, The Matrix Online.
As co-editor William G. Doty claims in the introduction, Jacking In situates the franchise in the context of "the history of thought"-from Romanticism to Postmodernism and the posthuman-and in the context of cinema. Accordingly, the volume is multidisciplinary in scope, though it remains firmly set in the humanities and social sciences, as shown by the authors' credentials: Religion and Culture, Comparative Ethnic Studies, English, Philosophy, History, Anthropology...
Besides Doty's introduction, other highlights of Jacking In include John Shelton Lawrence's reading of the film trilogy as a fascist narrative, and Frances Flannery-Dailey and Rachel L. Wagner's analysis of the franchise's problematic connection of violence and religious themes.
Jacking In also includes a useful appendix with a glossary of names and terms used in the franchise, plus a collection of internet sites by theme and a short bibliography of recommended readings.

This is far and away the best work on the Matrix films. It is the only one that covers the entire franchise; the films, the games, the pop culture aspects. Doty's introduction is amazing, while the other chapters manage to cover just about every aspect of the series you can imagine.

Highly useful for anyone interested in figuring out which colored pill to take.

Perfect Jewish songbook for a young kid

My 6 year old is just starting to learn piano, and he is just now getting introduced to chords and playing with both hands at the same time. It is always encouraging when a kid can sit at a piano, and instead of playing songs he has never heard (like "Merry Melody" or "Happy Hands"), he can hear a familiar tune come out of the piano that he is playing. This book fills the need perfectly. Most songs involve only 1 hand playing the complex part (it may switch left to right, but no combos), and if both hands are playing, often the left is just playing whole notes. Most of the songs don't use the black keys either. The print is bold and clear, and your child will be tapping out I had a little dreidel, Svivon, and Maoz Tzur in no time. You won't be booking any gigs with these arrangements, but that's not the point. They are ultra-simple, and great to build some confidence. As the child progresses, Al Hanism and Mi Y'malel are both a little more complex (but they are at the back). Recommended and worth the moeny for a child to learn.

I am very pleased with this music scores. My 6 year old daughter enjoys playing them. She knows some of them from her favorite cartoons (Little Einstein's, etc...),

David L. Dotlich and Peter C. Cairo discuss how to use action coaching to improve individual effectiveness and boost your overall organization. Their approach begins with fostering self-awareness and then uses this awareness to motivate change that the organization needs. Action coaching involves a series of steps and some specific coaching tools. While this book provides a fairly well-organized and well-written introduction to the concept, it covers familiar training and development ground. If you are a beginner in this area, the repetition of steps and processes will come in handy. Experienced trainers will find the coaching tools quite familiar and the assessment questions fairly obvious. Thus, we at getAbstract.com recommend this book for those who are new to training and development, or for employees who are considering getting coached.

Dotlich and Cairo have put together a fine and practical book that really helps focus coaching skills towards results. They give a very specific approach to developing an action plan to produce results from coaching. In fact they address four kinds of results - self-awareness results, performance improvement results, performance breakthroughs and finally full-blown transformations. Maybe most important for modern organizations is the anal;ysis of coaching skills in the context of the organizational needs, not just individual developmental needs. We develop and support people because our organization needs their current compliment of skills enhanced with other skills or it needs to rehabilitate a counterproductive approach. Although much of their work is not necesarily new, I believe they have packaged it to be more usable and accesible. I would highly recommend this book for someone looking for a chance to evaluate their own coaching skills, develop an improvement action plan and maintain high levels of motivation to improve their performance. Who know, maybe even transform their performance!

The need to cope with change, inside and outside of the organization, and the employee's need for personal development should be brought into alignment, say these founding partners of CDR International, a consulting firm that specializes in executive coaching. Action coaching is a process that fosters self-awareness, and guides personal development so that an employee's personal development goals are congruent with the goals of the organization.

Action coaching differs from traditional coaching in three ways:

1. The employee's relationship to the coach is a business relationship rather than a therapist-patient relationship.

2. Action coaches tailor their strategies to the individual and the strategies are geared towards performance breakthroughs, where traditional coaching tends to be unfocused and generalized.

3. Where traditional coaching focuses on personal insights, Action coaching translates insights into actions with organizational results.

There are eight steps to implementing Action coaching in your organization:

1. Determine what needs to happen and in what context.

2. Establish trust and mutual expectations. Make sure the employee understands the purpose of the coaching as well as the steps in the process.

3. Contract with the employee for results. There should be a formal written and oral agreement with the employee about the purpose of the coaching and specific goals to achieve.

4. Collect and communicate feedback.

5. Translate talk into action. Use your feedback to enact change. Review and revise goals when needed. Make sure the goals are still in alignment with the business needs of the organization. Set deadlines.

6. Support the employee in taking big steps.

7. Foster reflection about actions.

8. Evaluate both individual and organizational progress.
