Dr. Robert W. Sebesta is an Associate Professor Emeritus of computer science at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. He received his PhD in computer science from Pennsylvania State University. A very academic approach to web programming

If you are familiar with the author's book (in its many editions) on programming languages, all I can say is that this is written in a similar style - thorough and very academic. There are code examples demonstrating what is being discussed, and there are summaries in each chapter as well as exercises and review questions, but you might be left wondering "what is the big picture here?". It by no means has the programming manual style of an O'Reilly book that often works through one big project - or several of them - as a way of teaching you internet programming principles. The good thing about this book is that the author has covered each subject very thoroughly. The bad thing is that you will need to read the book in short doses digesting each portion slowly as his style is quite academic and each page is densely packed with information. Since the last edition the author has added three chapters covering Ruby, Rails, and Ajax.

I would say this book is OK if you have a pretty good background in programming in C and C++ and already know something about web programming since there is only one preliminary chapter and it is rather vague. If you don't have such a background, let me recommend the various "Head First" books by O'Reilly and Associates on the subject as well as their other various books on web programming. You might wind up with more books and spend more money than if you buy this one, but I think your journey through the world of web programming will probably be more enjoyable and more comprehensible. fast-paced, effective overview of multiple web technologies

If you don't have a clue regarding web markup or scripting languages, as in "none", then don't get this book. You won't be able to follow. However, if you have at least written some basic scripts/markup, get ready to do some work (it will be work), and learn tons from this guy.
It's packed with information; a concise summary of nuts and bolts of multiple technologies that go into making a dynamic website.

It's brevity was part of it's challenge for me, and I think for others as well. One user gave 2 stars for "gaps in explanations" but, I strongly disagree with this poor rating. The Preface reads ".. this book is aimed at college students, not necessarily computer science majors, but anyone who has taken at least two courses in programming ... also useful for professional programmers who wish to learn Web programming ... the goal of this book is to provide the reader with a comprehensive introduction to the programming tools and skills required to build and maintain server sites on the web." I'm keeping it as a reference because the author has done such an exceptional job of covering the rudiments of entire technologies in single chapters.

If you have never even touched Javascript, or PHP, or at least some programming/scripting language, then then this book will be too much work. This book is not an intro to HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, AJAX etc.. It is a densely-packed overview of multiples of them, with the understanding that you already know how to do basic programming/scripting.

A Good Survey of Web Technologies

This book fulfills its purpose of presenting a variety of web technologies to the user at an introductory level. All of the technologies on the cover of the book are given about a chapter (~20 pages) each. For someone with programming experience who knows very little about certain web technologies, such as what XSLT is and how to use it, the book is for you.

However, this book will only get you to the intermediate level of familiarity and skill with these technologies. More advanced reading, practice coding, and use of online resources are necessary to really develop expertise in "programming the world wide web". This book is a very good starting point.

Almost any dictionary that you buy of this brand Langenscheidt is of excellent quality. It's modern, with clear examples, it includes pronunciation and grammatic help. Very few pictures or images.

Sloppy work

There are problems with this book. It purports to teach you how to ask questions, but gives hardly any information about understanding answers. But worse, it doesn't give honest translations and so can lead to misunderstandings. For instance, if you want to ask "Is this seat taken?" the German words they actually give you mean "Is this seat free?" -- exactly the opposite meaning. If you think you will be able to sit down if you hear the word, "Nein," you will sit down when you have been told not to, thus looking like a total jerk.

Other translations could be cleaner. For "Do you understand?" the translation should be "Verstehen Sie?" Instead, they give you words that mean "Have you understood?" (Haben Sie verstanden). That's kind of okay, but unnecessarily complicated -- besides not being an actual translation.

This random freedom makes it impossible to construct your own sentences using ones in the phrase book as a model. Once I began to spot these oddities, it made me very nervous about trusting other phrases in the book.

As to organization, it's okay if you plan to go to a doctor's office or to complain about your meal in a restaurant. The little "info" paragraphs sprinkled through the book are a nice touch. The inside cover has "essentials" of hello, goodbye, yes, no, etc.; but the phrase I used most on my recent trips was "I'm sorry, I don't understand German." That one isn't on the inside cover. It would have been useful for the book to include several blank pages for you to write your own essential phrases, because your needs will be unique.

Even though I found the phrasebook to be pretty bad, the Langenscheidt dictionary seems pretty good, although it has words the normal tourist clearly doesn't need (the German word for G-string is string) and leaves some more useful words out.

My other reference materials are Pimsleur's German lessons and Frommer's phrase book (which includes helpful words to use during sex!). I vastly prefer these. While Frommer's is a little larger than Langenscheidt and will challenge your pocket, its printing is much clearer and it has a much easier pronunciation guide. It purports to include a dictionary, but you'd be better off with a real one that has lots of words.

A well-written book with a nice variety of applications, with some deficiencies
By One-Reader
This book's emphasis is on how to mathematically express and solve engineering problems. It is an appropriate text to learn about applying mathematics, but inappropriate for learning "pure mathematics". It is a well thought-out and organized work with many strong points, but also some weaknesses.

The strong points include: (1) an intuitive presentation of mathematical concepts which facilitates understanding, (2) the inclusion of numerous examples and solved problems in the text, (3) an easy and friendly informal style of presentation, (4) coverage of most of the important topics in basic engineering mathematics, (5) the good, but not excessive, use of meaningful graphics, and (6) discussion of the use of mathematical software to solve engineering problems. This later point is significant, as many engineering mathematics books ignore or only briefly mention the use of mathematical software.

Some may reasonably question the authors' choice of MATLAB, primarily a "number crunching" package, as the primary software, with an overlay of Maple commands. Although straight Maple may have been a better choice, the MATLAB presentations are generally easy to translate to Maple.

There are, however, a few issues that diminish the presentation :

Probably the most frustrating is the Exercises' problem descriptions. Problems are often presented with multiple parts. Unfortunately, each problem part is not identified by a separate letter or number. All problem parts are just run together in the statement of the problem. A better organized set of problem statements would be quite helpful.

The authors do not include learning objectives, as found in some other contemporary texts covering similar ground, e.g., Stroud's "Engineering Mathematics". Stroud's behavioral objective format is particularly helpful in identifying the skills readers should have developed after finishing a section. The inclusion of objectives would definitely benefit readers.

Most of the examples presented are easily solved by the reader from already provided material. However, the authors occasionally throw a curve, no mathematical pun intended, and present examples beyond the capability of most readers at this stage in their mathematical maturity. For example, the "packing problem" in the second chapter. Here the author provides answers without details of how these nontrivial solutions were obtained.

On a few occasions the authors' answers to Exercises are, arguably or demonstrably, incorrect. Continuing from the Chapter on functions:

An example of the former is when the authors present a problem of a road built x meters above rough terrain. In the solution set a value of -2 for the independent variable is presented as acceptable, resulting in a negative area. The authors explain that this would represent the "area of cutting". The authors' had just described how to identify the appropriate domain of a function. Thus, a better answer would be that for the problem as presented a value of -2 is not in the domain of the function. However, they could then show how to restate the problem with an extended domain and derive a different function to provide for both positive and negative values relative to the terrain's surface. In other cases, solutions are given without discussing important assumptions. In the "real world" making the correct assumptions is most often the key to getting appropriate answers.

An example of a demonstrably incorrect answer, is when the authors' present the function 1/[x(x-2)]. The authors state that this function is increasing on x < 1 and decreasing on x > 1. However, as the denominator of a fraction cannot be zero, this function is not defined at either x = 0 or x =2. Thus, the intervals in which the function is increasing or decreasing can be defined only for points where the function is defined. Thus for example, it should have been defined as increasing in the intervals (-infinity, 0) and (0, 1) , i.e., excluding the point x=0.

Occasionally the lack of a formal, as opposed to intuitive, definition may impede understanding. The presentation of a cusp would definitely have been improved by adding a formal definition which included the idea of a limiting tangent.

For US based readers, the occasional difference in language usage may cause a minor interruption in the presentation's flow, e.g., when the term standing charge is used in place of the more common US term fixed charge, etc.

Perhaps most importantly, the authors' references and guidance to the reader on the application of advanced mathematical software means that more realistic problems can be, and often are, presented. In many other engineering mathematics books, readers will generally find exercises designed to be easily, and sometime with more difficulty, solved by hand. However, in the real world many engineering problems do not have easy hand-derived solutions, and any solutions may be extremely difficult or impossible to find. In this sense, unexpected "tough problems", often requiring computer-derived solutions, are more realistic.

In conclusion: The major deficiencies here are the larger than expected number of misstatements and errors for a 4th edition, and the lack of clarity in the presentation of some concepts where only an informal definition is provided. Thus, this book would probably be a poor choice for independent study.

However, the references to mathematical software, along with the authors' easy writing style, applications of mathematics to a range of topics, and use of "bite-sized" sections, means this book is worth considering if you need a supplemental book to help enhance your basic grounding in engineering mathematics, or you seek a slightly less traditional presentation.

An Excellent Introduction

This as an excellent basic introduction to venture capital. As a layperson, until reading this book I had conflated venture capital with what Haislip calls "angel investing." In The Summer of a Thousand Cheeses we had addressed the problem beginning cheesemakers have in raising capital, and we felt that venture capitalists might well be the answer. We now know that venture capital is a much more formal and mainstream activity than we had believed. After clearing the air of such confusion in the opening chapter, Haislip goes on to address the primary issues affecting venture capital in a systematic and easily understood way. People already in the field will probably find little new in this book, but students seeking a basic background and persons wishing to know more about this kind of investing will find much of interest in it.

Good detailed introduction

Haislip promotes the benefits of venture capital as a good way of financing the innovation that drives future employment and consumption of beneficial goods. Among benefits of VC are minimum disclosure requirements and regulation. There is only Sarbanes-Oxley with no content shown in the book. Nor is any Dodd-Frank restriction mentioned. He naively advocates government subsidies and favorable tax treatment. It's like inviting a crocodile for lunch.
The book examines both success and failure of VC, emphasizing long the long holding time requirement. It examines career opportunities although mostly for the vicarious investor. The need for contacts is emphasized. A venture capitalist is paid for fund raising more than selection of investments. There is a very fine history of VC activity that raised too much money in the dot com era before the lean times since 2009. There's environmental politics involving the alternate energy boom showing the price of corn outstripped the price of energy.
There's good insight on evaluation of investments. The mechanics of dilution through successive stages of capital investment is well done. In financing, loan vs VC is studied with the advantage of loan financing being non-dilution of stock ownership. Preferred stock is often demanded by financiers. The best of the book is accounts of CALPERS, Getty Trust, Harbor Vest, KPCB, Sequoia Capital and many others along with some of their successful investments. It titillates us with stories of investments in Google, Baidu, Amazon and others. The investing basics section cites Team, Technology and Time as the important factors, meaning that the most important factor in evaluating a potential investment is its management team.
In the current global market the U.S. is still the most active VC outlet although others are catching up. Interestingly each nation follows different methods in ambivalent cooperation and rivalry. The book examines VC in China, Japan, Russia, Brazil and smaller markets. Haislip cites need for innovation with the U.S. still in first place in the global market. It's actually potentially harmful as the U.S. has all but precluded its citizens benefiting from its innovation. The solar panel industry was given away before the solar panel was invented. If Solyndra had been success full it would have been moved to China. Nowadays jobs created by innovation, as with monetary and fiscal policy, go mainly overseas.
While the book contains a lot of good information, it doesn't motivate me to invest. Nor does it leave me with the feeling that I understand the subject. My small experience has been that limited partnerships are established for the benefit of the general partner, exactly opposite to the ideas herein.

Great Book. Clear and Concise.

Really enjoyed this book. It's brilliant for anyone who's trying to raise funding for a startup and how the funding landscape works. Most importantly, it's hugely actionable, you go into meetings about funding much more comfortable as it demystifies the process and lets you as the start-up person understand the objectives and goals of the funding bodies.

It's surprisingly well written and is instructive rather than most of the other books I've read in this space which are a VC writing about how wonderful their success story it.

Passing the 70-410 exam!

This book is a good start and reference for exam 70-410. You will need this to pass but please don't fully rely on this book. You will FAIL if you do. I bought this book as well as purchased/practiced the Transcender and the Pearson test question. Just over 500 questions in both of them. Still I failed the first exam and passed the second exam. Though during the second exam, I resigned myself to failing. Questions in the actual test is not as simple as the test exams or the book. A lot of test questions do not give you the full picture and expect you to actually know the commands fully.

Gone are the days of MS exams where you could memorize tests questions. Now when you pass, you really feel like you deserve it.

YES, you need this book to help you pass the exam but don't rely on this book fully. TechNet and everything else including real life lab experience is what you need to pass.

An important book to read, but not sufficient to pass the exam.

This book WAS helpful in passing the exam. I barely passed, and only by 1 or 2 questions. Some of the practice test questions that came with the book were similar to the real world exam questions. There were also a number of questions on the actual exam that I believe were outside the scope of the book, and probably outside the scope of 70-410... I'm also pretty sure a lot of the [trick] questions were written by sociopaths... I remember back in the days of NT4 and Server 2000 when the exam questions tested your real-world knowledge. Now-a-days, it seems like they just test you on the most obscure things they can think of, providing a myriad of similar answers that are just slightly wrong... As I was taking the exam, I thought to myself, "I bet somewhere in the 1000 page book I just read is that obscure power shell command, but I've used Windows Server for 10 years and I've always just used the GUI before"... Why isn't that a choice here? The whole point of Windows Server was that it had a nice GUI. I never understood why you'd bother with "server core"... Power Shell is fine too, but if the same thing can be accomplished in less steps in the GUI or with a previous tool, why bother re-inventing the wheel? Then again, this is just the "server" version of Windows 8, so my expectations should have been lower...

I had looked at many other books before deciding to buy this one. This one is by far the best out there, but expect some pain on the 70-410 exam... Right now Microsoft is doing a "second chance" promotion, where if you fail you can take the exam again for free.

The 70-411 and 70-412 "cert guide" books are non-existent as of this writing. I'm not sure if something happened to the author, or if Pearson just lost interest, but once you pass 70-410, I'm not sure what is the best book to continue.... I have not gone past 70-410 yet. Maybe it's best to just wait for Server 2016 at this point... I found the Microsoft Press books to be extremely lacking.

however what i like about this book is that it seems to really ...

yes just finished this book. really worth it. this book wont build scenarios for you to try. its just tells u what functionality exists and where to find it. so it really depends on the type of book you want. however what i like about this book is that it seems to really cover and know the exam very well. there are multiple instances where new themes are introduced and just touched upon like WDS and noted that this will be tested in 411. i read this in conjunction with Panek's Sybex series. thats nearly 2000 pages of mcsa fun. i feel i know the core material quite well and will sit my exam. i am an experienced test taker so take what you will. MBA. ITIL. network+. PMP. and Six sigma in the last few years and all did very well and passed on first try.
Please note book is 1000 pages so it aint for the faint hearted. and there will be sections like domain local. universal groups and global groups that you may need to read over and over to grasp.

Meticulously documented and theoretically innovative, this book illuminates the manifold factors—economic, political, and social—that determine the nature of the oil state, from the coherence of public bureaucracies, to the degree of centralization, to patterns of policy-making.

Karl contends that oil countries, while seemingly disparate, are characterized by similar social classes and patterns of collective action. In these countries, dependence on petroleum leads to disproportionate fiscal reliance on petrodollars and public spending, at the expense of statecraft. Oil booms, which create the illusion of prosperity and development, actually destabilize regimes by reinforcing oil-based interests and further weakening state capacity.

Karl's incisive investigation unites structural and choice-based approaches by illuminating how decisions of policymakers are embedded in institutions interacting with domestic and international markets. This approach—which Karl dubs "structured contingency"—uses a state's leading sector as the starting point for identifying a range of decision-making choices, and ends by examining the dynamics of the state itself.

very good book about what oil does to a country

Basically, this book is a very strong and appealing summary of the consequences of over-reliance on oil production for developing countries. Not only results, but also underlying causes are considered: most attention is given to institutional and political aspects of what Lynn calls "petrolization" of the state. He argues that petroleum is the only product, which creates strong long-lasting ties among politicians and institutions involving them into constant seeking of oil revenues (for their own as well as for state benefit). Future decisions in this environment are determined by actions taken in the past, which makes it very hard to break away from this circle. The case of Venezuela is especially well considered; much of the information is taken from Lynn's conversations with Venezuelans top governmental officials and, hence, is of a great value. Carefully chosen data are well presented on a passionate manner which conveys the dramatic nature of changes brought by petroleum in this country.
The future of new oil-producers becomes less shinning as we look at the data provided by the author. Only Norway, who managed to overcome most of the negative aftermaths of its oil windfalls, deemed as a winner within the group of oil producers. Lynn ascribes this success to a well-prepared and robust bureaucracy and stable democracy existing in Norway.
The only problem I see in this book is its superficial treatment of economic factors related to "petrolization" of the state. In this context, Oil Windfalls: Blessing or Curse? by Alan Gelb and Associates (1988) or Sustainable Development In Mineral Economies by R. Auty and Mikesell (1998) or would be a great supplement.

Great points - but somewhat academic

This book provides an iron-clad explanation for the failure of oil exporters - especially developing nations - to use their raw material blessings as a lever for improvement. The author provides outstanding comparisons among oil exporters, along with amazing parallels to the Spanish empire. There's an important point here about how human nature and government limitations often doom these "blessed" countries to failure. Call it the King Midas effect...
On the downside, her point is clearly made in the first 50 pages. In the remainder of the book the author goes into too much detail regarding the political evolution of Venezuela. And she fails to end with a reader-friendly synopsis or a glimpse of the future.
With today's troubles in the Mideast, this book could have been a lay-reader best seller. Unfortunately the author's writing is aimed more toward Political Science professors than the general public. Still worth the purchase, however.

Interesting contribution to theory

This book is a good contribution to the scholarship of one-good exporters, such as oil for many Middle Eastern countries and Venezuela. The author focuses on Venezuela, with occasional reference to other countries.
The main thesis is that aside from the traditional Dutch disease of such intense exporters, there is an organizational component in the downfall of such plenty. For example, she argues that a large self-serving infrastructure and bureaucracy is built around the "pot of gold". She argues this may be one of the main causes that coutnries squander such valuable resources without ever refocusing them on the development of people (health and education) or the country's economy (such as through the extension of value-added activities).
Overall, an interesting proposition, though I am not sure this is a phenomenon unique to countries faced with the plenty of oil or other products. It is a strong case that inefficiencies are added through bureaucracies, but I still believe much of the damage is caused by the traditional Dutch disease.
