A festival and celebration, it is also a source of community income and opportunity for shared community effort; a chance to display the town attractively to outsiders and to define and assert McCall's identity; and consequently, a source of disagreement among citizens over what their community is, how it should be presented, and what the carnival means.

Though rooted in the broad traditions of community festival, annual civic events, often sponsored by chambers of commerce, such as that in McCall, are as much expressions of popular culture and local commerce as of older traditions. Yet they become dynamic, newer community traditions, with artistic, informal, and social meanings and practices that make them forms of folklore as well as commoditized culture. Winter Carnival is the first volume in a new Utah State University Press series titled Ritual, Festival, and Celebration and edited by folklorist Jack Santino.

Insightful, Entertaining, and Enlightening!

An excellent ethnography of the winter festival in McCall, Idaho. Gabbert is an excellent ethnographer with a very nuanced understanding of the relationship of community to the winter festival. The book is not only well-written but very entertaining, Gabbert provides insightful theoretical analysis but also infuses her ethnography with humor and lets the personality of her informants shine through. The book is approachable and appropriate for the scholar but also is accessible enough for the general public.

About the Author

Paul C. Etter has worked in ocean-atmosphere physics and environmental acoustics for the past 40 years, including as an active duty ASW officer for the U.S. Navy. He is the author and coauthor of more than 200 technical reports, professional papers, and books addressing environmental measurement technology, underwater acoustics, and physical oceanography. He received his B.S. in physics and his M.S. in oceanography from Texas A&M University.

Great visual introduction to key philosophical problems

Depending on who’s behind them, non-fiction comics can be fascinating and educational, or didactic and boring. Thankfully, The Cartoon Introduction to Philosophy falls firmly into the first category. I attribute that to the crediting of Kevin Cannon as both artist and co-writer. It’s clear that a visual presentation of the material has been kept in mind throughout. The other co-writer, Michael F. Patton, brings the subject matter, since he’s a philosophy professor.

As demonstrated by the cover, the metaphor throughout the book is a journey down the river of philosophy. That allows for various imaginative, entertaining images (as well as the occasional talking fish, commenting archly). Although the text primarily drives the book, there are plenty of strong visuals to enhance, emphasize, and expand on the words.

Our narrator is Heraclitus, one of the pre-Socratic philosophers, given a friendly face and active demeanor by Cannon. He explains early on that philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom, and to investigate that, we’re going to find out what other philosophers thought through history. He’s a great choice for the imagery, since he’s the one that first said, “It is not possible to step twice into the same river.”

In addition to the historical framework, the book is arranged around a collection of the most famous problems tackled by the field over the years:
* logic — looking at what makes an argument successful, and watching Aristotle climb a mountain through a chain of true premises
* perception — examining how we know what we believe, and meeting Descartes and his skepticism in a prison metaphor
* minds — Plato guides us in exploring mind/body dualism, and a tiny Leibniz explores the brain and drives Descartes in one of the most creative sections in the book
* free will — determinism on a yacht trip
* God — exploring religion with logic
* and ethics — what choices we should make about how to live

I appreciated the way that it was acknowledged early on that the canon, the best-known philosophers, makes for a “testosterone-heavy line-up”. As we meet a new philosopher, there’s a half-page biographical sketch with life dates, a representative quote, a summary of his importance, his location, his most famous work, and a fun fact. An Exuberant Canoe Ride Down the River of Western Thought

Why is an introduction to philosophy important? Simply enough it is an introduction to thinking logically about what you as an individual actually believe when it comes to topics such as God, free will, ethics and even your own mind. Michael Patton and Kevin Cannon's Cartoon Introduction to Philosophy covers each of these topics, including a chapter on logic itself, by dipping the adventurous reader's toes into the works of some of Western Civilization's premier thinkers. All of this is achieved through a light-hearted canoe ride down the river of knowledge with Heraclitus doing double duty as guide and paddler. Along the way he gives the reader the broad-strokes of Western thought by enlisting the help of lively animated renditions of personalities such as Kant, Plato, Hume, Spinoza, Locke - even Nietzsche can be found skulking about like a goth kid. In no way a chronological account of the discipline, Patton does one better by showcasing the back-and-forth conversational nature between the texts and ideas that continually shaped art, governments, laws, sciences and mathematics over the past give-or-take 3000 years. I imagine this book would make for a fun, accessible text for the many virgin thinkers bumbling their way into their first freshman philosophy course. And as Heraclitus points out in the introduction to the book, philosophers depend heavily on metaphors and hypothetical scenarios to explain their reasoning, so bringing the field of study to a visual medium feels axiomatic. Even though much of the subject matter was familiar to me, the crisp artwork and humorous dialogues between the philosophers made for an entertaining and intellectually meaty read. Very well done.

Informative Book, Lively, Masterfully Rendered

This was a highly informative and humorous book. Aside from capsulizing the major figures in philosophy, the book has continuity as a story. I found the lighting of scenes excellent as well, masterfully rendered. I've been a fan of Kevin Cannon's work for over a decade now and it's great to see his continued progress as an illustrator.

About the Author
Marieke de Mooij, Ph.D. (Netherlands), is a consultant in cross-cultural communications, as well as a retired profesora associada of international advertising at the University of Navarra in Spain and visiting professor at several universities across the world. She is the author of several academic publications on the influence of culture on marketing and advertising. She has also authored books on culture and consumer behavior as well as culture and communication theory worldwide.

A unique perspective on consumer behaviour

The book is unique in that Marieke K Mooij uses theories from cultural anthroplogy and interpersonal communication to present a framework for consumer behaviour. It is particularly useful for practioners who are working in underresearched markets and are looking for ways to explain why consumers behave the way they do. The book makes extensive use of Hofstede's 5-D model to locate members of different cultures along the dimensions of culture and then uses this to explain differences in buying behaviour, communication styles and advertising appeals. The conclusion of the book is that individual behaviour is shaped more by the culture they belong to than it is by income or other differentiators. The one limitation of the book is that most of the examples are European, but I would recommend it even for those interested in Asian markets

This book review is on a 'titre personnel" basis.
I enjoyed the international advertising course which Marieke gave at Universidad de Navarra in 1997. As a teacher she is very capable of communicating the importance and urgency of this diverse and complex subject: managing marketing communications and brands within the outer/ and inner spheres of market cultures. Marieke applies the 5 dimensional model of G.Hofstede to illustrate and diferentiate a clear and full colour image of cultures and values. Being dutch myself, I recognise both the theory of Hofstede, but also the paradoxes Marieke has found. Intrigueing phenomena such as Japanese business success and collectivism, such as status and success in feminine cultures etc etc are often raising eyebrows, and not seldomly at highbrow corporate levels.
Cultural understanding, I have learnt, is possible only after understanding one's own culture, and a commitment to learn about the other culture, not matching it with your own. Marieke does this very well, she places anecdotes and case-studies is an objective setting, viewing it with an uncoloured microscope. She has added theory, academic research and good practice to make this book complete.
This book, for me, is one of the few great books on international (intercultural) marketing communications (and brand management).

The book itself is fine. The problem I'm facing is navigating through the pages, especially skipping to different chapters. MOST of the time, the book freezes, does not respond, and I am forced to close out and reopen it. Once reopened, it takes three to four tries to go to the chapter that I wish to read. When I access this on my laptop, it's a little easier to navigate, but it's still a bit annoying to not be able to scroll normally, only page by page, and it's slow loading.
In normal books, this usually isn't a problem because you read it all the way through once. For a college textbook, since flipping back and forth throughout the book is crucial, it becomes a problem. I am studying online at a university in the US from Brazil in order to be with my father through some difficult times this semester. This means the eTextbook is my lifeline. I don't have access to physical books, and I don't have other students who could help me the way they could in a traditional classroom setting. So far, I have been able to get by studying for the exams, but the added pressure of not knowing if my book will open doesn't help!
Compared to the other eTextbook I have on Chegg, this is not a good layout.

It helped me under stand the Catholic position.

Upon This Rock was a well written and thought out book. It gave all the sources that he used and helped me to understand the depth of the Catholic position. I do not agree with Mr. Ray's conclusion but now I realize I may well be wrong. I think one goal of this book was to defend the Catholic Church and show why the church claims the authority it does. I have to admit many of my presuppositions have been changed and his work has helped me understand and even respect the faith of Catholics that much more.

Awestruck...

After reading opinions by James White and William Webster on the same subject, I thought I'd been given the full truth. But Mr. Ray's further, deeper development on White's/Webster's study showed me that I had only been given an incomplete story. What else about the Protestant faith is only "partially" developed ? Mr. Ray's presentation is overwhelming. One particular nugget in the goldmine of truth was not detailed in the New Testament, Old Testament, or the Church Fathers. It was a geography lesson on Caesarea Philllipi. It had never dawned on me what a long journey this was for Jesus and his disciples. The significance of the journey and the rock have come into focus!

I am now dedicating myself to learning what other partial truths have been developed fully by the catholic church.

Great Book

The discussion was excellent in that it chronicled the Office of the Papacy both in Scripture and in history. It is an excellent source book and demonstrated excellent research techniques especially in the Early Church Fathers documentation and reference. There are a great deal of footnotes, but unlike some books, these footnotes are very readable and useable either in a discussion as a Catholic Christian Apologist or as a bibliography in a paper. I highly recommend this book.
