Appropriate textbook for middle school or low-level high school only

This is a good, well-written textbook with a lot of great illustrations and diagrams. However, the book is written on a very basic level, and only provides a very superficial coverage to current environmental science topics. I would not recommend this textbook for upper-level high school students. For teachers, this textbook also includes a resource CD with Powerpoints, tests, quizzes, and other worksheets.

This book was required for an Ecology class but I'm glad it was because it has helped tremendously with Lab Reports, Field Summaries, and other scientific papers. Now that the class is over I technically don't need it anymore but I will be sure to hold on to this for future reference.

Waste of a perfectly good tree

This is the most unorganized and aggravating book I have ever had to use. Don't get me wrong there is a lot of good information in the book but you will never find it when you need it. I can hear people saying now "just look it up in the index." That would be okay if the index referred you page that that information was on but it doesn't. If I have a question about a paper and have to look in this book it usually ends in this hunk of junk flying across the room and a google search. I had to buy this book because it is the writing guide that UNF requires but it is an absolute waste of money up front and time when start hunting through it.

This book was required for one class I'm taking which requires me to write a lab report each week--but I wish I had known about it when I started my college career. It is so helpful and easy to read and understand, this is a book you will be able to use for the rest of your life (especially if you choose to stay in the field of science/science research). I recommend this to any Biology major--or even someone taking some higher level bio classes in high school.

About the Author
IAN L. McHARG was the founder of and is professor emeritus in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania. Known as the father of ecological planning, his landmark design projects include The Woodlands, Texas, and Amelia Island, Florida. Professor McHarg has received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including The National Medal of Art, presented by President Bush in 1990.

Significant Book for Architects - Though a Little Slow

While it's not the kind of book you want to lounge around the fireplace reading, it is a book that is frequently referred to by architects. It is significant in designing and ecologially friendly building in today's built-up environment. Summary: Not a great book, but a useful resource for architects.

Before GIS There Was McHarg

Ian McHarg's Design with Nature revolutionized landscape planning just at the time when the modern built environment was being recognized for its devastating effects on natural systems. McHarg devised techniques for planners to envision not just the finished product of human development, but its complex interaction with watersheds, wildlife habitat, viewscapes and anything else that could be represented as a layer on a map. Fast forward to today....Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are complex databases that organize information into the "layers" that McHarg proposed. GIS analysis has found its way into urban planning, oil spill response, wildfire management, epidemiology, endangered species management, socio-economic analysis and many other forms of spatial planning and design. Maps that are products of GIS analysis are digital versions of the tissue and mylar overlays of McHarg's vision and technique. This book is essential reading -- not because planners aren't using its ideas (almost universally, with GIS, they are) but because they don't understand GIS's debt to McHarg's pioneering thinking.

About the Author

Suzy Young is Programme Leader of the Institute of Psychiatry's MSc. in Clinical Forensic Psychology and an Honorary Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Broadmoor Hospital. She has served as an expert witness in a number of high profile legal cases, including the Jill Dando case, the Billy Joe Friend case, the Albert Newman case. She has been involved in over a hundred legal cases referred by Defence solicitors, the Crown Prosecution Service, Customs Prosecution Service, the Police, the Criminal Cases Review Commission, the Home Office National Offender Management Service and directly by the Court. Her evidence has been influential in the Court of Appeal. Michael Kopelman is a Fellow of the of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists; he was a founder member of both the Memory Disorders Research Society and of the Society of Expert Witnesses; and he is a past-President of the British Neuropsychological Society and President-Elect of the International Neuropsychiatric Association. He has also served on the Board of the International Neuropsychological Society, 1999-2002. He has served on 12 editorial boards, including Brain, Neuropsychologia, and Cortex, and he has refereed for over 60 scientific journals. Gisli Gudjonsson has published about 300 journal articles, 50 book chapters, and six books. He pioneered the measurement of interrogative suggestibility and has published extensively in the areas of police interviewing, psychological vulnerabilities and false confession. He has acted as a consultant in a large number of cases for the police, prosecution, Criminal Cases Review Commission, and defence lawyers, and provided written or oral testimony in many high profile cases, including the Guildford Four the Birmingham Six., Judith Ward, Engin Raghip, Idris Ali, Donald Pendleton, Andrew Evans, Derek Bentley, Darren Hall, Peter Fell, John Flanagan, Patrick Nolan, the UDR 4 and Patrick Kane in Northern Ireland, and Raymond Gilmour in Scotland.

Good math curriculum!

My son isn't very mathy and struggles with programs who try too much at once. This program does one thing at a time. It's not visually over-stimulating, either. I think it's a good program that will get the job done.

The best text book on electronics I know of

I'm a student of electronics in the open university, Israel.

As the standard text book for my course I got a translation of Sedra & Smith "Microelectronic Circuits".
For me, a newbie in the area of electronics (but with solid background in electricity) it was one of the worst written books I ever read.

Concepts such as input & output impedances were never fully explained and the transistors chapter was a nightmare to read due to inconsistent depth levels.

For some time I searched the web for clear explanations and found bits and pieces but not a clear and rigorous treatment of the subject.

Until I stumbled on this pearl of a book.

Everything is clearly explained and the chapters are logically ordered (e.g., op-amps are delayed until AFTER transistor theory is explained and practiced).

If you really want to have a deep understanding of the subject - do yourself a favor and buy this book.

I have the sixth edition of this book,and i think that althought is not the best book of the world is quite good book.You must learn about basic electricity first, a book like "basic electricity" by Nooger Van Valkenburgh is a very good one.You must know the Ohm law,Kirchhoff laws,simplify pasive circuits ( serie circuits,parallel circuits and complex circuits,what is a capacitor a inductance, thevenin's theorem and other things like that) The content of the book is based on the semiconductor components.The book explains what a diode is,how it works,the reason of his function,his characteristics,and many application circuits (How to convert ac current to dccurrent, how to change the level of dc voltage of a wave,etc);the book also explains what a transistor is and his apllications(amplifiers, an element for do digital circuits and the base of electronics),the book tells you how to polarizate a transistor,how amplifies and his models,and many circuits.Finally the book tells you what an operational amplifier is,power amplifiers,oscillator circuits(a circuit that converts dc current to ac current) and other control power dispositives. The book also have many problems,some illustrations,and a basic course of PSpice( a program for simulate electronic circuits).

About the Author
William E. Ryan is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona, where he has been a faculty member since 1998. Before moving to academia, he held positions in industry for five years. He has published over 100 technical papers and his research interests include coding and signal processing with applications to data storage and data communications.

Shu Lin is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Davis. He has authored and co-authored numerous technical papers and several books, including the successful Error Control Coding (with Daniel J. Costello). He is an IEEE Life Fellow and has received several awards, including the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize for U.S. Senior Scientists (1996) and the IEEE Third-Millenium Medal (2000).

This book is very well written by two of the leading coding experts in the world. The emphasis is on modern iteratively decoded codes and heavily weighted toward LDPC codes. The LDPC codes have borrowed heavily from classical codes and have transformed themselves into LDPC code classes. The book is for the advanced graduate researcher and the practicing coding engineer. The book is not a coding cookbook, the state of iterative coding today is still in its adolescent stage. There are still interesting problems to solve and they are alluded to in the book and the advanced topics chapter. This is must reading for the coding researcher and those working on next generation communications at the physical layer.

Excellent coverage of modern codes, not a replacement for classic texts

This book does a great job of explaining modern channel channel codes. LDPC codes are given exceptionally thorough treatment, but the various types of turbocodes are also covered well. This book's explanation of EXIT charts is better than any other coding textbook that I've read.

This textbook is not a replacement for the classics like Lin and Costello. Its treatment of block and convolutional codes is enough to introduce the modern codes, but not especially thorough or rigorous. This book can be a great companion to Lin and Costello, which provides a much stronger mathematical background to coding theory and goes into classical channel codes in greater detail.

This book shows some details in LDPC codes and EXIT charts that you would not found in other literature. Another aspect that conduct me to buy this book was the Authors (William Ryan and Shu Lin) who are a reference in terms of channel coding and theoretical analysis. The book is organized in such way that you can improve your knowledge step by step. The details how to build modern LDPC codes are very didactic and self learning. If you have the chance to buy it do not hesitate. I strongly recommend this book.
