George R. R. A Satisfying Read

Somewhere in the 4-5 range. I really liked this book and can't wait for the next.

If you are expecting something like GAME OF THRONES you can go ahead and kill that expectation or put it on a shelf to languish. This book is delightfully different. In fact it reminds me of the historical classics like THE BLACK ARROW and IVANHOE. And if it wasn't for a handful of instances with naughty language the story would be suitable for 6th Graders on up. However it does use the C-word for lady bits and a few other choice words I can't recall at the moment, so it's not a book I'd hand to a youngster. (Editors, come out with a kid's version! You'll make more money)

When I first began reading I wasn't sure what I thought but it wasn't long until I got caught up in Dunk and Egg's meanderings through the kingdoms. Dunk is a huge young man that is as close to an honest, chivalrous knight as you can come. Egg is a prince in hiding and then a prince in training as a Dunk's squire.

As Dunk is a 'Hedge Knight', which is to say he freelances, they meander from job to job taking in the occasional tourney. They, of course, run across fair maids and evil doers. Adventures spring from politics, jealousy and greed, and the fact that Dunk is still learning his trade and finding his own way in the world.

What makes the story so engrossing is that Martin knows his medieval stuff. He knows about the tournaments of the times, the weaponry, the garments, and even the food. All this serves to bring the story alive.

And as I sit here typing this review I find myself wondering what Dunk and Egg are doing today. Which means that Martin has done his job admirable. He's made me like the setting and characters so much that I not only care about what great adventures they are working up to, but also about what they are doing when absolutely nothing much is going on.

Dragonflies or dragons?

One of the signs of a well-developed fantasy world is that the author isn't confined to the present -- they can spin stories from centuries ago, and it still fits their world perfectly. Such a tale can be found in the adventures of Dunk and Egg, which takes place a century before the events of George R. R. Martin's epic A Song Of Ice And Fire series. "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" brings together all three of those tales -- the story of a struggling hedge knight and his faithful yet snarky squire, both of whom are more than they appear.

In "The Hedge Knight," Dunk has spent most of his life as the squire to an aging hedge knight. But his master eventually dies, leaving him a sword, some old armor, a pair of horses and a handful of coins. He is determined to make a name for himself at a tourney, and hopefully be hired by some lord -- despite the annoyingly outspoken boy named Egg who is following him, hoping to become his squire.

But when Dunk arrives at the tourney, he finds that he's outmatched by everybody. He only need to score one win, but without armor he doesn't have a chance against the knights from powerful, aristocratic families. So he uses his wits to raise money... only to run afoul of a Targaryen prince when he defends a pretty puppeteer. Given the choice of losing his hand or trial by combat, Dunk chooses the less disfiguring option -- but that means he must find six allies to help him in the combat. And he might still lose his life at the end.

"The Sworn Sword" brings Dunk and Egg to Standfast, in service to Ser Eustace Osgrey. The land is in the middle of a horrifying drought, and when Dunk investigates the sudden drying-up of a nearby stream, he discovers that Osgrey's neighbor Lady Rohanne has built a dam to redirect a nearby river. There's a feud going on between Eustace and Rohanne, which will soon bloom into a vicious little war and the loss of Rohanne's lands -- and Duncan may be the only one who can resolve things once and for all.

"The Mystery Knight" sees Dunk and Egg entering an area full of political strife -- a rebellion some years ago has caused a lot of hostility towards the Targaryens. When invited to a wedding melee, Dunk decides to go as an unidentified "mystery knight" to avoid any people who might have heard of Ser Duncan the Tall... only to find himself and Egg the center of a conspiracy of murder, the theft of a dragon egg, and a brewing threat against his own squire.

Compared to A Song Of Ice And Fire, the three stories of "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" are relatively light fare -- sure, they have plenty of gritty medieval atmosphere and a few tragic deaths, but these stories are positively fairy-tale-like compared to the dark stuff Martin usually writes. Don't worry, there's still plenty of political strife, mysteries, battles and the odd speck of the fantastical (a dragon's egg, a knight with precognitive dreams), but the main focus is on a simple hedge knight and his squire.

Martin's writing is simple, but rich with descriptions ("Reeds grew thick along its edge, and a tall leafy elm presided over all. The spring grass there was as green as any knight’s banner and soft to the touch") and he writes some snappy dialogue between Dunk and Egg. Every story has an escalating story of political strife, with Dunk's seemingly simple existence repeatedly interrupted with the political repercussions of House Blackfyre -- he just wants to wander around and fight for whoever, sleeping under shady trees and eating salt beef, but he keeps being tripped up by the scars of the past.

And the approach to Dunk is what makes these stories so gripping. The man is a mass of endearing contradictions -- a gentle teenager who is also a powerful fighter, simple yet wise, intelligent yet straightforward, ambitious yet humble in those ambitions. His clear sight and good heart are what ultimately win people over to him, and even if he's kind of grumpy with Egg during the squire's more spoiled moments, there's not much actual bite to any of his complaints.

And what of Egg? I won't reveal too much about this character's life, but he is a perfect counterpoint to Dunk -- a boy torn between the glamorous idea of being a squire, and the actual struggles it involves. He has a nimble intellect and a smart mouth, but sometimes shows a distinct lack of common sense compared to Dunk.

"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is a delightful trio of side-stories for fans of the Song Of Ice And Fire series, and a solid introduction to the land of Westeros for newcomers. And of course, it leaves you wanting to hear about more adventures of Dunk and Egg.

Great compilation prequel to Song of Ice and Fire with incredible artwork

This is a compilation of the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, and take place almost one century before Game of Thrones. Note the material is not really new: this compiles the three novellas "The Hedge Knight" (Legends), "The Sworn Sword" (Legends II) and "The Mystery Knight" (Warriors). For those who follow the series, these novellas are set in the time when the Targaryens still hold the Iron Throne. A great collection of all three stories, this compilation also adds over 140 pieces of original artwork which will surely be a hit for fans of Martin's written works.

Though not as anticipated as the Song of Ice and Fire next installment, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a nice look into the history of Targaryen rule. The book follow the friendship of "Dunk," Ser Duncan the Tall (future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard), and "Egg," (a pivotal character in the future). The story is similar to the knight-squire relationships found in Song of Ice and Fire (ie Brienne and Podrick) and reads similar to the Song of Ice and Fire series. The fantastic tale gives a deeper insight into the Seven kingdoms and the motivations for the people who are a part of them. Well written and with numerous new original illustrations, it is a great read.

Any Martin fan who has not already read the novellas will certainly enjoy it, and the artwork alone is fantastic. It is an in-depth genealogical journey and character study, interwoven in classic Martin style. Other than the illustrations, it is not new, but for those new to this story line and for fans of original artwork related to the overall series, will enjoy A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

A good attempt, but lacks depth and often is Trite

A good attempt, but I couldn't like it like I wanted to. Perhaps its because I recently re-read Nayyirah Waheed's Salt and it was impossible not to compare the depth and realness of them both (and perhaps that was unfair, she is in a class all her own)
This book just fell flat to me. Had a few good pieces, but overall it was very shallow and read more like the author parroting well known emotions and feelings, but nothing felt spot on. Few felt original. It felt like the author read some other authors who use this style and said "i can do that" and parroted things into a book. Maybe it was rushed. I don't know.
Perhaps this book will be good for someone who requires less depth and originality, but overall I just didnt feel it. And I REALLY wanted to... like REALLY wanted to... but it fell flat.

Poetry is always difficult to review as everyone takes something different out of it or maybe they don't understand it.
This book has a lot to do with self love and reminding yourself that you are good enough, you are great, you are beautiful.
It discusses the pain of loving someone who you thought loved you back but later learn that what they said were just words to them with no real meaning. It discusses how it's not your fault and that's something we all need to hear.
This is telling you to love yourself, focus on you, and so many other wonderful things.
I would recommend this collection of poems to anyone who is looking for a slight pick me up, who needs to be reminded how great they truly are.

Mixed Bag

Well, that was disappointing. Kind of.

First off, I feel I must warn potential readers that Blood Mirror is not, in fact, the last book in the Lightbringer series, as I thought, but rather the second to last. Undoubtedly, this unknown fact (to me) somewhat soured my experience of the book as a whole and, undoubtedly, I am somewhat to blame for not double/triple-checking the series length BEFORE reading. After all, fantasy authors do, unfortunately, have a habit of stretching things out once they have a hit on their hands. Weeks having changed it once from a trilogy to a quadrilogy(?) already, I thought this series was safe. Locked in. Apparently not. But, I digress. To the actual *penultimate* book itself.

Despite the initial grievance, this is not a bad book. Indeed, there is a lot of good stuff here, a lot of creativity, a lot to admire. The magic system, the fun interplay (for the most part) between the characters, the surrounding mythos of the world--all of that is still here. Some of it is expanded upon or, even, improved.

Kip, in particular, sees vast improvement in this installment. Previously, I must admit that I have always disliked this character and his POV chapters and I bemoaned it when the series began to shift away from Gavin and more toward his whinging (albeit fake) bastard. He was annoying and unfunny in a particularly painful, cringe-worthy sort of way (and not in the cute, adorkable way that Weeks was obviously trying very, very hard to evoke). In this book, however, his maturity grows in leaps and bounds and the evolving relationship between him and Tisis is one of the Blood Mirror's stronger points. So, yes, I actually found myself liking a few of Kip's POVs this time around, which was something of a shock.

Karris and Teia, meanwhile, are both serviceable. Neither have any WOW moments, but they both have stuff to do and that stuff is generally interesting. And that's all I have to say about that.

Gavin, though, is the best, as always,and he remains the primary reason I read this series. As in the Broken Eye, there is too little of him here when compared to the other POVs--but, as I expected this, I didn't mind the focus on the other characters overmuch. With him, the story always crackles on the page, and this book is no different.

I will quibble slightly, however, and say that it is in his plot line you can feel the stretching of these books the most. It's quite clear, as it was in the last, that Gavin's plot is ready to move on, to get going toward the end-game, but because Kip's and the rest aren't, Weeks has to make Gavin's chapters shorter and sparser and, in a sense, very Rand al'Thor-esque (which is both good and bad, as you Wheel of Time fans ought to know).

As for the actual writing, it is, like in the previous three, uneven. Weeks' inner dialogues go on far too long, explain things far too much, spell out what exactly precisely specifically the characters are feeling at all times, and generally illustrate an overall lack of trust in his reader to intuit anything on their own. If not for the cursing and violence, this series could very easily be put in the YA category. Every now and again, though, Weeks will go on these wonderful little runs that are both surprising and beautiful. A paragraph, a bit of dialogue, that is genuinely moving.

But alas, similarly, the tone is also all over the place. One minute characters are making fart jokes, the next they're saying ridiculously melodramatic things like 'I am become death'. Also, a character directly quotes Sartre, somehow, some way, and for some reason.

Basically, with Weeks one learns to take the good with the bad. Great, creative ideas; wildly varying execution of those ideas.

As for the last couple critiques, I fear I must dip briefly into virgin waters. So be warned:

SPOILERS AHEAD

Let's just cut right to the heart of the matter, shall we? Ret-conning. Others here have accused Gavin's backstory as presented in Blood Mirror as a rather extreme form of ret-conning, and I have to agree. At the very least, it feels something as a cheat. We the readers have always recognized the fact that it was a ridiculous notion that fake-Gavin had managed to smuggle real-Gavin into the center of a bustling, paranoid city and imprison him there without anyone the wiser. But the books previous to this one never wavered in the conviction of that notion and so we, the readers, went with it. We accepted it. Hell, we even got several POV chapters of real-Gavin trying to escape.

But now, it turns out that we were all just having a grand shared fictional hallucination--because real-Gavin was actually never imprisoned, he was killed by fake-Gavin ages ago, during their last battle. Mind blown, I suppose, even if it feels as though this was a twist either made up completely on the fly, or well after the second book was written.

There are other revelations made to fake-Gavin down in his colored prison that I won't go into here as, for the most part, they worked. This Fight Club twist was the only one that really had me rolling my eyes. Heavily

Now, on to the much maligned subplot with Tisis and her uncooperative loins. Yes, you read that right. There is a goodly portion of this book, an epic fantasy/adventure, devoted to a young teenage couple being unable to consummate their marriage due to the clenched too-tight muscles of a lady's nethers. Reading the other reviews, a lot of people seemed to have some hate for this one, but honestly I didn't mind it. It dragged on for far too long (penetration is only achieved, in fact, in the very last chapter and on the very last page of the book, which is--to be frank--an odd choice) and it reminded me of a 30 Rock episode wherein Liz Lemon experiences the very same problem, which made me chuckle a little every time the problem was brought up. But overall, eh. It was fine. Sort of weird, not in that this issue exists, but in that so much time and word space was devoted to it. But fine and it didn't ruin the book for me by any stretch.

So, yeah, basically you already know if you're buying Blood Mirror or not. If you've read the previous three, you're buying it. I'll just add that you don't have to worry about Wheel of Time levels of filler here. Stuff actually happens. There is also no absolutely egregious cliffhanger (ala Dance of Dragons/Walking Dead). And the next book, book 5, has a BUNCH of cool stuff set up to happen. So. Nothing to worry about. Yet. But if a Book 6 is ever announced, yeah. Ima be worried.

Otherwise, my fellow fantasy chums, we all of us settle back in for the long wait. Doors of Stone, Winds of Winter, Stormlight 3, etc, etc, and now another Lightbringer book. So. Here's to hoping the end next promised us is actually that: an end.

Too much filler and not enough moving of the plot

This book just isn't as good as the others. There's a ton of filler that doesn't further the plot. Seriously didn't need an entire segment of the book dedicated to bedroom problems. I read fantasy books to escape reality for a little bit and the filler was just painful.

Unfortunate.

First three books were great, interesting characters and plenty of action. This one is a bit of a slog. It feels lacking direction and there are many, many paragraphs that are just a waste. Chapters are short, and you switch characters every single chapter- it's hard to even find your bearing sometimes. We might be at the infamous downturn of a great series. Unfortunate, I really liked the premise.
