Fun book...
By Sandra L. Dwan
I bought two books for Columbus Day for my 5 year old. I really love this one however it is bit advanced for us right now. It has lots of captions and very busy. It's very cute and will be fun to use in a year or two! I am glad I got it but would recommend it for a 6-8 year old. We will definitely get good use out of it in the future!

Early Explorerations with a Sense of Humor
By 7785pat
This book is educational in spite of its humorous illustrations and characters' side comments. Written from an elementary child's perspective, the book contains easy to read, picture-laden sections on topics such as, Why Do You Want to Explore, Which Way Would You Steer, Can You Cope On Board, and Would It All Be Worthwhile? A Glossary and Index make this book a great supplemental resource in the classroom or a fun read for a child who just wants to learn about Columbus. Bits of historical trivia not found in textbooks create enrichment. Content parallels that of a 5th grade text with a simpler reading level.

Mischief and the Masters (Masters of the Shadowlands) (Volume 12), by Cherise Sinclair

She wants a short, sweet Master. One Master.
The two devastatingly dominant Drago cousins have other ideas.

Her life destroyed by a stalker, Uzuri Cheval starts anew in Tampa and joins the exclusive Shadowlands club. Unconvinced of her claims that she can overcome her fear of big men without help, Master Z gives her a time limit. And she is improving--until she hears the stalker is out of prison. Now her time limit is up, and the Masters will intervene, which is okay--as long as whoever helps her is short. Okay, sweet and gentle would be good, too.

But two Doms? Dangerously experienced and dauntingly powerful cousins? No way.

Having volunteered in every hellhole in the world, Dr. Alastair Drago is ready to settle down. Detective Max Drago has joined him and, once again, the cousins share everything. A house, lives, problems…and whatever submissive catches their interest. One mischievous submissive has definitely caught Alastair’s. However, having been burned by a woman, Max remains detached…until little mischief’s troubles turn deadly.

Mischief and the Masters is the latest book in the bestselling Masters of the Shadowlands series. If you enjoy edgy ménage and dominance spiced with humor and suspense, you’ll love Cherise Sinclair’s latest romance.

This book had it all… Another great addition in one of my all time favorite series!!

Another great addition in one of my all time favorite series!!
By Cindy O
Shadowlands favorite prankster finally meets her match in two sexy Doms. For two years Uzuri has avoided telling her story and facing her past. Master Z gave her a time limit to do both and that time has come – and we all know Master Z always gets his way.

Uzuri Cheval left a horrific past behind and moved to Florida. She has a great job as a fashion buyer for a huge department store, and she has made friends with fellow subbies. Uzuri is the type of friend that would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it but yet if she needed to call on a friend for help she never do it. Her past left her with many fears. Along with not having the confidence in thinking her friends would be there for her she is also scared of large men which has made it impossible for her to find a Dom to top her. When strange things start happening she fears her past has come back and her take flight instincts kick into high gear.

We all know how Master Z likes to play matchmaker and he's set his eyes on Alastair and Max Drago to be the Dom's who finally break down all the barriers that Uzuri has built up. Problem is Alastair is the only one ready to settled down, his cousin Max not so much due to something from his past.

This book had it all. There were so many laugh out loud scenes between the Shadowkittens. Finally getting to know the pasts of Uzuri, Alastair and Max and how all three of them help the other deal not only with their past but also help each other deal when they have a bad day at work. There is also plenty of suspense and let me tell you the final showdown was twisted. If Cherise ever wanted to branch out into writing serial killer books I'd think she be a master at it (' get it)

Another great addition in one of my all time favorite series!!

Great Series, Ok Book
By Rachael Ragsdale
I really enjoy this series, and loved getting to read Uzuri's story. However, not a great book in the series. I'm a little over the female characters having a past of abuse. After the first couple of books that keeps coming up over and over. It's kind of like she combined Andrea and Beth's issues and got the story line for Uzuri. Then throw in two doms.

Additionally, this book just needed some editing. There are continuity errors. For example, in Andrea and Cullen's book, Cullen's mom is passed. However, in this book he has a mother/son dance at the wedding. Also, slightly offensive language. Like describing eyes as having an oriental tilt, is culturally insensitive. In previous books Uzuri's hair was described as kinky. Not really ok either. I'm going to keep reading the series, because I love the characters. However, this book felt a little thrown together and not really loved on enough.

Too much recycled material.
By Moony Blues
I finished the book around 2:00am last night and decided to sleep and reflect on it before reviewing. It was merely okay. I've loved this series, and the Masters of the Mountain/Masters of Dark Haven series, for a while now. But there were too many elements and plot devices in this book that appeared in previous books for my liking.

It echoed If Only almost point for point. Insecure submissive, in this case Uzuri, gets injured and two of the Masters of the Shadowlands take her home for a few days to keep an eye on her recovery. She decides to have them help her with a serious issue, so she moves in for a while. Something bad happens, and she assumes all of the blame and guilt, breaking off the relationship and running away. Sound familiar to anyone else? Granted, that isn't the entire plot. Phsycotic stalkers seem to exist in larger numbers in Sinclair's world than they do in reality. It seems to be one of her favorite plot devices.

In addition to the recycled material, the characters are becoming stale and almost two-dimensional. Uzuri isn't the first of the Shadowlands submissives to have deep personal issues that come from a past lover who turned out to be a crazed stalker. Max isn't the only LEO in the series to have occasional troubles dealing with the stress of his job. Alastair isn't the first medical professional who lets patient situations beyond his control come home with him to bleed all over the people for whom he cares. Sinclair has found comfortable niches with these kinds of characters and situations and doesn't seem to want to try anything different.

Also, for being the supposed worst pranksters in the club, Uzuri didn't seem to be as into the pranks as her reputation. Sally was more active and creative in If Only, despite her own deep personal issues. It certainly didn't fit with Uzuri's characterization in previous books.

Bottom line? After 11 books and a novella, Cherise Sinclair has become entirely too comfortable with this series, and she's left the door open for more. I will give the next one a try, but if it isn't substantially better than this one, I'll not read further in the series. Overall, Mischief and the Masters was okay, and if you've stuck with the series this far and want to know why Uzuri is the way she is, it might be worth your while. Otherwise, you might not find it to be worth your time.

The Economics of Tourism, by Mike J. Stabler, Andreas Papatheodorou, M. Thea Sinclair

This new edition of The Economics of Tourism reflects the tremendous changes that have occurred in the tourism sector in the last twelve years. It recognizes that the nature of tourism demand and supply is being transformed by innovations in information communication technologies, market liberalization and climate change. Paralleling this, there is much greater interest in the study of tourism by both students and researchers in mainstream economics.

The text is now in four parts covering: demand; supply; national, regional and international matters and environmental issues. The concluding chapter appraises the state of the economic research into tourism. The increased interest in tourism has engendered the development of new methods of analysis and the refinement of established ones. Accordingly, the book has been extensively restructured, revised and expanded with two new chapters: chapter six of the first edition is now broken down into two and a new chapter has been added on environmental issues to take account of new developments, critically review the associated literature and consider future trends in tourism economics research. The reader-friendliness of the book has also been enhanced in various ways, such as the extensive chapter cross-referencing to refresh the reader’s memory and the inclusion of a detailed list of abbreviations.

The Economics of Tourism will continue to make accessible for the non-specialist, the application and relevance of economics to tourism. Extensively revised and updated, including research and case studies the textbook will be an indispensable resource for both students and researchers.

Excellent guide to a neglected topic
By Kevin D. White
The second edition of Economics of Tourism is a welcome update to a classic text. The authors provide as complete a review on the subject as can be found anywhere. This is an outstanding guide to an under appreciated and under studied area of economics.

Python Playground: Geeky Projects for the Curious Programmer, by Mahesh Venkitachalam

Python is a powerful programming language that's easy to learn and fun to play with. But once you've gotten a handle on the basics, what do you do next?

Python Playground is a collection of imaginative programming projects that will inspire you to use Python to make art and music, build simulations of real-world phenomena, and interact with hardware like the Arduino and Raspberry Pi. You'll learn to use common Python tools and libraries like numpy, matplotlib, and pygame to do things like:

  • Generate Spirograph-like patterns using parametric equations and the turtle module
  • Create music on your computer by simulating frequency overtones
  • Translate graphical images into ASCII art
  • Write an autostereogram program that produces 3D images hidden beneath random patterns
  • Make realistic animations with OpenGL shaders by exploring particle systems, transparency, and billboarding techniques
  • Construct 3D visualizations using data from CT and MRI scans
  • Build a laser show that responds to music by hooking up your computer to an Arduino

Programming shouldn't be a chore. Have some solid, geeky fun with Python Playground.

Get ready to dive into the fascinating world of electronics and computer programming
By Raviprakash
Disclaimer: I was a technical reviewer of the chapter on application of Raspberry-Pi (chapter 14) in this book for the publisher.

If you are the kind of person who likes to tinker with electronics and computers than "Python Playground" is definitely a book worth reading. It assumes the reader has moderate level of understanding in computer programming and python language. The author introduces electronics and programming in python through a series of interesting hardware and software projects. The book covers a wide range of topics including text processing, data analysis, plotting, animation, simulation (implementation of some interesting algorithms like Karplus-strong), image manipulation and processing, computer graphics (including 3D) and lastly hardware (electronics, interfacing and fun with Raspberry-Pi). The style of introducing these topics by examples makes this book eminently readable and can get the reader to do useful stuff right off the bat. Personally, I was able to interface numerous electronic instruments to a computer for data capture, analysis and display by using the chapter on Arduino (chapter 12) as reference. The chapters on hardware hacking are an excellent introduction to electronic circuits and other popular hardware like Arduino and Raspberry-Pi. Overall, not only is this a great book to read but also a good reference. I would definitely recommend this book to all of you who are interested in dabbling with electronics and programming.

Fantastic Projects
By thatfatdood
I've only skimmed through this book so far, but it's amazing. I can't believe the quality of the projects that Venkitachalam provides.

I've been programming with Python for a while now, and I'm tired of so many beginner's books. I'm glad that the author assumes you are familiar with the language and concepts, and he dives right into making awesome projects.

You can make a laser light show that responds to sound, you can simulate the sounds of musical instruments, and create 3D particle effects, all using Python.

If you want to make cool s***, I HIGHLY recommend this book!

It nicely leads the reader through various programming projects in an easy to read style. There is just enough math and theory to satisfy the curious and the coding style is clear and easy to follow.

So, if you ever wanted to understand how auto-stereograms worked and then write the code for it, then you will love this book.

The Living Goddesses, by Marija Gimbutas

The Living Goddesses crowns a lifetime of innovative, influential work by one of the twentieth-century's most remarkable scholars. Marija Gimbutas wrote and taught with rare clarity in her original—and originally shocking—interpretation of prehistoric European civilization. Gimbutas flew in the face of contemporary archaeology when she reconstructed goddess-centered cultures that predated historic patriarchal cultures by many thousands of years.

This volume, which was close to completion at the time of her death, contains the distillation of her studies, combined with new discoveries, insights, and analysis. Editor Miriam Robbins Dexter has added introductory and concluding remarks, summaries, and annotations. The first part of the book is an accessible, beautifully illustrated summation of all Gimbutas's earlier work on "Old European" religion, together with her ideas on the roles of males and females in ancient matrilineal cultures. The second part of the book brings her knowledge to bear on what we know of the goddesses today—those who, in many places and in many forms, live on.

From Publishers Weekly
Before her death from cancer in 1994, the pioneering archeologist Marija Gimbutas had nearly completed this book, a distillation of her life's work. After decades of scholarly research that shaped much of the field of pre-Indo-European archeology (7000-3000 B.C.), Gimbutas produced two copiously illustrated, oversized books accessible to a nonscientific audience, The Language of the Goddess and The Civilization of the Goddess. This final, smaller work illuminates the continuity between scores of religious symbols from the cultural flowering of Neolithic Old Europe in the fifth millennium B.C. to European folk cultures of the modern era. The first part concisely presents Gimbutas's discoveries and observations about imagery of goddesses and gods, symbols and signs, sacred script, temples, burial practices and social structure in Old Europe before 4400 B.C., and reveals the sophisticated degree of abstraction and artistry in the expression of the Old European cyclical sense of birth, maturation, death and regeneration. The second part traces the adaptations of these Old European elements into subsequent religious systems from the late Neolithic era to our own century. As in her previous work, Gimbutas's aesthetic and spiritual sensitivity adds a depth unusual in archeological writing. This book is a major contribution to cultural history, especially the history of religion; clearly no one but Gimbutas could have produced this masterful contribution to the archeomythology of Europe. Although Part One is generously illustrated with ink drawings of excavated artifacts, none appear in Part Two, as they had not been assembled before Gimbutas's death. Miriam Robbins Dexter, who edited the book, has added a helpful introduction plus a summary at the end of each chapter.

From Library Journal
Gimbutas, a much-praised and consistently controversial archaeologist and scholar of religion, startled academia with her assertion of the realities of goddess-focused religion in preliterate Europe. This book, ably completed after Gimbutas's death by Dexter, was intended by her to be a popular treatment of her themes but also draws upon later findings. Wide-ranging and fascinating, The Living Goddesses should intrigue the curious and delight most feminist scholars. Highly recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
Another contribution to the much-ballyhooed theory of matriarchal prehistory, by the late feminist pioneer Gimbutas (Archaeology/UCLA; Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe, not reviewed). Gimbutas built a career around her controversial claims that before Indo-European warriors invaded around 4400 b.c., ``Old Europeans'' from Ireland to Italy enjoyed an agrarian, peaceful, goddess-worshiping existence. Their aesthetic standard was higher than that of other cultures of the period, with sophisticated architecture, complex linear language, and advanced farming techniques. Their religious rituals centered on birth and regeneration, with female reproductive images occupying prominent roles. Many archaeologists have criticized Gimbutas's techniques and interpretations, noting that she reads more into the physical evidence than is supportable. Are all circles eggs, for example, and is every triangle a pubic image? At times, Gimbutas's claims, which she reiterates in this volume, nearly completed before her death in 1994, border on the ridiculous, as when she argues that the bullgenerally a symbol of patriarchal dominancewas really a woman-centered image for the Old Europeans because the bull's head and horns resemble the female uterus and Fallopian tubes. The latter half of the book moves to a discussion of social structure, with Gimbutas maintaining that Old Europeans had much greater respect for women's rights than their Indo-European successors. However, Gimbutas sometimes engages in a circuitous logic, claiming at once that women were socially respected because Old Europeans worshiped the goddess and that they worshiped the goddess because women were already regarded so highly. Also, Gimbutas conflates all Neolithic cultures into one ``Old European'' entity, missing the diversity of religion and practice among them. The book is well-written, and much credit must be given to editor Dexter (a lecturer in womens studies at UCLA), for tying together Gimbutass last works in an eloquent manner. Full of intriguing possibilities, but Gimbutas's work is too wedded to theory and ideology, rather than to archaeological evidence, to be ultimately persuasive. Old European culture has survived in its living goddesses.
By A Customer
For those familiar with Gimbutas's earlier works, Part I is a refresher course on how the peoples of Neolithic Europe saw the Goddess. Especially interesting are the chapters on Stonehenge and other temples and ceremonial centers of wood stone and wood throughout Britain and the continent. The book's greatest value, however, lies in Part II, which comprises chapters on the Minoan, Greek, Etruscan, Basque, Celtic, Germanic, and Baltic religions. Gimbutas and Dexter explain with precision and clarity how the civilization of early historical Europe was an amalgam containing both Old and Indo-European elements. The Old Europeans were already there, of course, working the land, building cities, creating their elegant pottery, worshipping in temples sometimes miscalled palaces or fortified settlements. The Indo-European tribes came and saw and conquered. And then they settled in. Yes, they made terrible changes, but they also intermarried and adopted, and life went on. Much remained and was transformed. Although we are, for example, perhaps most familiar with the Greek gods and goddesses, we may not be familiar with their Old European ancestors. Hekate, Artemis, Athena, and Hera survived from Old Europe. So did some of the Greek gods, including Hermes, Pan, and (amazingly) Zeus. The information on the Balts is especially interesting, for they were the last pagans in Europe and their region "represents the greatest repository of Old European beliefs and traditions." This is the paganism Marija Gimbutas experienced as a child in Lithuania. Some who espouse the "culture wars" would have us believe that Gimbutas made it all up. This book is proof that she simply reported what she found. It is a testament to her extraordinary scholarship in archaeology, folklore, history, and matrilineal culture.

An Excellent Overview of a Gifted Scholar's Life's Work
By A Customer
Although some reactionary reviewers would like the general public to believe that the late Marija Gimbutas, Ph.D. was a beyond-the-fringe scholar, one only has to look at the list of illustrious scholars who chose to write for the earlier Anthology celebrating her life's work to see that such a view is an insult to this extremely capable, gifted, and intelligent archaeologist and scholar. Marija Gimbutas was just ahead of her time and in conflict with the predominantly male powers that be within the Miriam Robbins Dexter, Ph.D.; Riane Eisler, J.D.; James Harrod, Ph.D.; Carol P. Christ; Martin Huld; and Michael Dames to name just a few contributed to the Anthology volume honouring Marija's work. Kees Bolle, Ph.D. and Joseph Campbell can be numbered among Marija's admirers as well. Some reactionaries would like you to think that Marija stood alone and foolish in her ideas. However, time will tell and it seems that time and science are on Marija's side.
For those of you who have not had the privilege of an academic career or who are just starting out at University, you might not know that there are fads and fashions in academia just as there are fads and fashions in the other aspects of our lives. When I was an undergraduate, the History Dept. at my University was pretty much run by Marxist Historians. They groomed their students with their favorite concepts and practices and a generation of Marxist Historians was popped out. A few rebelled (some became reactionary, some revolutionary, and some just tried to be objective) and thus, twenty years down the line you have a change in fad and fashion and new schools of thought and modes of methodology take over in the halls of upper learning.
The same thing happens in all realms of study -- remember, all of these examinations and explanations are THEORIES! Even Marija's are theories; however, it is up the individual READER to determine which theory is logical and probable and to make their own choices. Do not surrender to the view of some self appointed arbiter of academia to tell you what is or is not of value.
Now remember, there are fads and fashions in academia. Marija's mode of theory arose from her life experiences (and just to find out a bit about the adventures of this extraordinary woman's extraordinary life is one reason to purchase "Living Goddesses") and the time in which she taught. Marija began teaching in the time of freedom and exploration that arose after W.W.II and in the Sixties. She continued teaching through the Seventies, Eighties and early Nineties. Many of her critics, however, are the products of the reactionary Reagan Era. Marija was not an ill taught or unaccredited scholar. She published twenty books and more than two hundred articles in various languages and taught at the best schools on this planet. She worked on many of the important archaeological digs of this century in many countries. She brought a new and fresh vision to the interpretation of data (which up until her time was nearly always interpreted by male scholars -- we see the world though our upbringing and this DOES matter in how scholars interpret their data). Marija Gimbutas, although she would have blushed at the praise, was a visionary genius.
I say this, even though I do not agree with all of her findings. However, there is enough in her theories to be of great interest and to make you comprehend the History of Western Civilization in a new way. A lot of what Marija theorizes makes incredible sense.
So, I say to you -- take a gamble and decide for yourself. I find that this is an extraordinary volume of work. Miriam Robbins Dexter, Ph.D. has done a wonderful job of condensing and clarifying Marija's life work into this very accessible volume. I think that everyone can get a good grasp of what Marija's theories were, and they are a refreshing breath of crisp clean air, after the thick, mind numbing fog that we have sometimes had to deal with in the halls of academia. Scholarship is supposed to foster new ideas and ways of looking at the world. It is awful to say that I do not think that this is always the case in our society. We are a society that still overvalues conformity; however, would you have your PC at the ready or be surfing the Internet if the conformists had had their way? I think not.
"Living Goddesses" is the final, fittingly comprehensive and approachable volume of Marija's life work. Miriam Robbins Dexter, Ph.D. has done a fantastic job of editing and finalizing the volume which must have been a Herculean task since the author was deceased. It is a gift to the minds of the world who explore, and wish to evaluate learning for themselves. It is a gift to the creative and visionary among us. I thank Marija Gimbutas, wherever she is, for gifting us with her knowledge, insight, and creativity. I also thank Miriam Robbins Dexter, Ph.D., for a wonderful job of tying everything together in an entertaining and enlightening manner. I highly recommend that you purchase a copy of this book and decide its merits for yourself.

The Kirkus reviewer obviously did not read the book!
By A Customer
The evidence laid out in this series of works is very compelling. The critics of these ideas seem only able to express themselves with "Preposterous!" or "Idiotic" but never with a calm rational comparison of data and artifacts.
The Kirkus reviewer says it is "bordering on the ridiculous" to assume that the bull could have been a female symbol, that this is Gimbutas' imagination. But then there is artwork remaining from this era with clear pictures of bull skulls with horns drawn over the pelvic areas of women, with the horns positioned where the fallopian tubes would be. This murals are reproduced in the book. Had the reviewer wanted to actually check what the book presented as evidence for this assertion, he or she would have been able to find this mural. Bull skulls painted over the pelvises of women, the symbolism is hard to dismiss.
The critics of Gimbutas either don't read her work or address people who have never read her work themselves.
Seeing the anger and spite towards this body of scholarly work leaves me wondering why is there so much hatred and antagonism towards the work of Gimbutas? Why are there so many irrational and inaccurate criticisms of her body of work?
The Kirkus reviewer was sloppy -- if he or she had bothered to read the book being reviewed, then he or she would have had access to the data that supports Gimbutas' assignment of the bucranium, the head and horns of ther bull, as a uterine symbol.
What kind of fly-by-night operation is Kirkus that they allow such sloppy reviews by someone who will make an attack on a position presented in the book without actually looking at the physical evidence for this position that is decribed and presented and footnoted properly in the book itself?
I am not impressed by the critic of Gimbutas. I haven't seen a criticism that was either accurate or unemotional.
