Worth the but

First, great book. Second, it definitely helped with concepts that are more difficult or the case law is either muddy or archaically explained. However it was more in depth than the actual law studies and some of the concepts are "hidden" and you have to find what you are looking for through either a keyword search or finding the general topic and reading through.

Very Helpful Book

I got this book so I can better understand what the heck the vet was telling me about two of my ferrets. It is a reall good resouce for pet owners to learn more about the different medical conditions that will come up with owning a ferret. However, be warned!.... This book explains thing in terminology that a vet or a vet tech will understand. It is not a book for the average person per se, but it did help me ask the right questions and to be better informed. One vet I talked to uses this book as a reference quite often. I enjoyed going through this book and it was very educational.

I'm not a pocket pet expert at all, so this is my "go to" book when I get a small critter in. Lots of information, and very easy to navigate. Nice drug charts in the back too.

This book is helpful with my hedgehogs. It is hard to find a vet that is knowledgeable with hedgehog care. I have a farm vet that is willing to see our hedgehogs for our USDA license. He finds this book helpful also.

About the Author

Dr. Ronald L. (Ron) Rardin retired as Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 2013 after a 40-year record of leadership as an educator and researcher in optimization methods and their application culminating after 2007 as John and Mary Lib White Distinguished Professor of Industrial Engineering on the faculty of the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. He headed the University’s Center on Innovation in Healthcare Logistics (CIHL) targeting supply chain and material flow aspects of healthcare operations in collaboration with a variety of healthcare industry organizations. He also took the lead with colleagues at Arkansas in founding the Health Systems Engineering Alliance (HSEA) of industrial engineering academic programs interested in healthcare.

 

Earlier, Professor Rardin retired in 2006 as Professor Emeritus of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University after completing 24 years there, including directing the Purdue Energy Modeling Research Groups, and playing a leading role in Purdue’s Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering. Previously he had served on the Industrial and Systems Engineering faculty at the Georgia Institute of Technology for 9 years. He also served the profession in a rotation from 2000–2003 as Program Director for Operations Research and Service Enterprise Engineering at the National Science Foundation, including founding the latter program to foster research in service industries.

 

Dr. Rardin obtained his B.A. and M.P.A. degrees from the University of Kansas, and after working in city government, consulting and distribution for five years, a Ph.D. at Georgia Institute of Technology.

 

His teaching and research interests center on large-scale optimization modeling and algorithms, especially their application in healthcare and energy. He is an award winning teacher of those topics, and co-author of numerous research papers and two comprehensive textbooks: a graduate text Discrete Optimization, published in 1988, and a comprehensive undergraduate textbook on mathematical programming, Optimization in Operations Research, which was published in 1998 and received the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Book of the Year award. Among his many other honors, he is a Fellow of both IIE and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), as well as 2012 winner of the IIE’s David F. Baker award for career research achievement.

Best book after Hillier and Lieberman

I thought there was only one best complete OR book is Hillier and Lieberman (H&L) until I got Rardin's book. Rardin presents the OR in different approach than H&L. The model building part is a little bit better than H&L, but the real meat is the fundamental of optimization. Search technique is well presented from the ground-up. This book can be served as the first book in OR if you're new to OR or the companion book if you know OR or even the first book in optimization in case you don't care to know OR.

The ultimate introduction to Mathematical Programming

I had absolutely no clue about optimization before I read this book. This book not only helped me overcome my diffidence, but also provided me with a very thorough understanding of the basics of the subject.
It is extremely difficult to criticize this book in any way. The language is plain English, not the technical jargon which other "introductory" books use. The book does not assume that the reader has a thorough understanding of linear algebra. Only a course in differential and integral calculus will do. The book provides several primers on a lot of topics- matrices, analysis, vectors etc., so that you do not have to interrupt your optimization studies and digress into these subjects.
There are three full chapters where the author provides real-life examples of mathematical modeling. Again, these are built up step-by-step, and not shoved down your throat.
The different approach to the Simplex Method is more intuitive than the traditional approach and more logical. The basic discussions on integer programming and non-linear programming are also worth mentioning. The numerous exercises and the presence of solutions to a number of them in the end make the text even more helpful.
The only somewhat weak point of the text is the chapter on interior point methods, where the book only provides the formulae and states that the derivations are "beyond the scope of the book". But, this is negligible and I recommend the book wholeheartedly

About the Author
Colin M. Roach, M.Ed. lives in the high mountains of Utah with his wife and three sons. He is a private school administrator with expertise in the areas of differentiated teaching and learning, and a member of the All Kinds of Minds Institute's national teaching faculty. Mr. Roach is an avid student of Japanese history, culture, and martial arts. Four generations of familial connection to Japan have fueled Mr. Roach's passionate study of Japan's archetypal warrior culture. In addition to his academic study of sword-related symbolism, he has trained with some of the top teachers of aikido and iaido in Japan and America. He holds the ranks of Youdan (4th degree) in iado and Sandan (3rd degree) in aikido. He also holds the teaching title ""Shidoin" in both arts. Mr. Roach often travels to teach sword-related symbolism, traditional Japanese swordsmanship, the etiquette involved when handling a Japanese sword, and iado's role in cultural preservation.

This book is a phenomenal compilation of information via literature, photographs and a compact disk. The information succinctly explains the cultural etiology of the Samurai Sword (Nihonto), its historical religious significance, and its relationship, influence and integration into modern Japanese society.

The chapters are well categorized in a logical sequence that detail the cultural and religious lore associated with the genesis of the traditional steel used for a sword's production (tamahagane); historically, the manifest martial need, events and evolution that created the world-renowned Samurai Sword; the various methods of craftsmanship, technique and skill employed in a blade's production which, fantastically, have resulted in a cultural heritage integrated into a modern society and industry; the historical periods of the Samurai Sword and their distinguishing characteristics and features; the transition and transmutation of the Sword into an artistic and cultural icon; the modern craftsman who continue the cultural heritage of Samurai Sword and the its impact on the modern world.

The book smartly utilizes a variety of photographs that effectively illustrate technical explanations. The illustrations provide a clear understanding of the subject matter. And the book serves well to dispel common myths and misunderstandings about the Samurai Sword. I would highly recommend the book for the connoisseur, aficionado, and the novice alike who appreciate the Samurai Sword and seek a continuing education on the subject.

Excellent Content but Lots of Typos

As others have mentioned, the component parts of this work are all excellent. From the photography to the in-depth analysis of Japanese sword making and the sword's place in Japanese culture, everything is well done. So why couldn't the publisher be troubled to actually proofread the book?

It's astonishing to me that such a high quality work can be eroded by the carelessness of a publisher. On a single reading I found so many typos that they became a distraction from the content. I feel that this particular edition (I bought the hardcover) was given short shrift by Tuttle. That's a real tragedy considering the subject matter and the obvious care the author put into this work.

The accompanying DVD provides some good "extras" similar to those found on movie releases. They left me wanting to see even more.

A GREAT BOOK.

This is a beautiful book. I love just looking into it. Then reading about the history and background of this art is amazing.
The work and love of sword craft is very special. The author has a great knowledge of what he's writing about.
I never thought it could fetch my interest as it did.
I really recommend this book. Just put it on your table and go back into it from time to time.
Being a Norwegian it's very exotic to read about a far away culture such as the japanese...
I just had some knowledge about Samurais and their swords...I guess that's why this book caught my attention.
I'm glad i bought it.

I agree, if you collect older pop culture books, you'll love this. I was about 6 when this thing came out, and maybe 10 when I snuck iinto my brothers' room to rifle through their things and found this. Even then I knew this book was silly. Hard to believe it was written by a doctor! Example, a couple goes to the doc because they cannot get pregnant. He asks what sort of contraception they use. "What are contraceptives?" the couple asks. Boom! Right away the doc has the answer! He realizes the man has been (trying to keep it clean here) "putting it in the wrong place." How did doc come up with THAT conclusion from a seemingly infertile couple by asking only one question? Just because the people don't know what contraceptives are doesn't mean they have never used them anyway! Were people really that stupid back in the 60s? Also, this was before abortion was legal, so the stories about dead women in bathrooms (from what I remember) scared the heck out of me. Now that I'm 43 and know a lot more I might pick up another copy to have even more laughs.

Interesting info... but somewhat prejudiced

Dr. Reuben's book is an update of his classic bestseller, and the reviews mentioning the previous edition make me happy to have grown up in a later generation that speaks about sex more openly.
The author's views have progressed somewhat since the earlier edition, but if you would like an unbiased view of sexuality, this is not the book to buy. For one, there is an anti-gay tone to all of the information on gay sex and culture. I am a 30+ hetero woman and I cringed at some of what was written here. I don't think authors should cater to a politically correct audience, but I was surprised that this came from a medical doctor with a specialty in psychiatry! At another point in the book, he talks about the IUD method of birth control almost as if it is responsible for sexually transmitted diseases. As far as I know, many women successfully use this as their birth control method...seems strange?! All in all, a fun read if you are interested in popular culture. But --especially for young readers-- there are much better books on the subject.

He shows us the simple concepts with the most value....some original...and some taken from others but shown the light of day as to the huge value they provide. For a musician who has spent the better half of his life either intoxicated or on a drug high, Kiedis, the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has produced a surprisingly detailed account of his life. Raised in the 1960s and '70s by a drug dealer father who first introduced his preteen son to drugs by mashing them into bananas, the high school delinquent and UCLA dropout seemed destined for a life of rabble-rousing until his high school band—cofounded by close friends Michael "Flea" Balzary and Hillel Slovak—took off and became one of the most popular groups of the 1990s. Though he peppers his book with little known facts (for instance, the author narrowly missed being named Clark Gable Kiedis), the punk-funk rocker dedicates too few pages to his introspective music-writing process and too many to his incessant drug use and revolving door of girlfriends (which included actress Ione Skye, singer Sinéad O'Connor and director Sofia Coppola). But while Kiedis fails to scratch beneath the surface of his fast-lane life, his frankness is moving, especially toward the end of the book, when his mea culpa turns into a full-blown account of recovery and redemption. A pretty good read

I have never been the worlds biggest Red Hot Chilli Peppers fan. Sure I think they are a good band with some really good records, but I've never felt the need to drive far distances to see them live, collect all their albums or any of the other stuff usually assosated with fandom. But Anthony Keidis' autobiography "Scar Tissue" interested me for a few different reasons. One, I do enjoy they're later period softer rock music, which for my money is some of the best alterna-pop you're likely to find. Two, I thought he would have some good stories since he was around in both the early eighties hardcore punk scene and the mid-ninties alternative rock boom. And three, in interviews he comes across as a pretty cool guy.

So on those fronts I was not dissapointed by "Scar Tissue". It was a pleasant and good book, full of surprising honesty and compassion even if at times it fails to go too deep below the surface. You learn a lot about his life, but not as much about him as you might like.

Now if you're not into what I call "junkie" books then you should probably stay away from this book. A large portion of the book is devoted to Kiedis' herion addiction which I have to admit was handled about as well as I have ever read. It is a cautionary tale with the typical body count of friends and loss loves, but rather then shaking his finger at himself and those around him, he tells it honestly and doesn't try to make apoligies about his behavior any more so then he needs to. This is refreshing and good. He's saying not to use drugs mind you; he's just going to tell you how it really is.

At times the book is written with a somewhat pedestrian writting style, but for the most part I sensed it came from Kiedis and not his co-author. It has, at it's best times, a conversational vibe that makes reading it that much enjoyable.

So I really liked the book, so why do I only give it three stars? Well, because there is a drastic rating inflation on this site. To me, a five star anything means the thing is flawless, four means it's in the top of it's league but not perfect, three means it's good but I've read/ seen/ heard better, two means it bathes in it's mediocrity, and one means that it's godawful horse manure. And Kiedis' book fits the three to a T. It's a good book, I enjoyed reading it. It's not one of the best books I've ever read, nor is it one of the worst. It's a good book that I'm pretty sure if you're interested in you'll dig.

And what more can you ask for?

The dark side of drugs, dark side of fame, dark side of life in the fastlane

Anyone coming for an autobiography of the Red Hot Chili Peppers might be a little disappointed in this book. Kiedis focuses more on his personal journey through life, and especially on his formative adolescent years. The Chili Peppers are a part of his life, to be sure, but this story is truly Anthony's personal struggles to be a sober, straight-living man.

Anthony spends a significant amount of the book on his teenaged years. He was essentially his father's roommate (not his son, not his "charge) in Los Angeles from the age of 12. He experienced more drugs and debauchery before the age of 18 than most people could live through in their entire life. In describing his experiences, however, Kiedis used an inviting tone; he never bragged about his exploits or tried to paint himself in an excessively rosy light. He simply invited the reader along to explore his personal experiences and emotions.

Scar Tissue is truly a book about drug addiction, about the lifelong slippery slope of trying to obtain (and maintain) sobriety. It is amazing that Kiedis can keep his dozens of periods of abuse and relapse straight in his mind, much less transform them into a compelling narrative journey for the reader. Life on drugs was in no way glamorous--Kiedis spent many years at rock bottom, barely surviving, and scrounging for his existence. He also fooled many people about his drug use, and managed to escape any arrest or scrutiny for possession. Reading about how Kiedis has to consider and seize his sobriety each and every day (he's been clean since 24 December 2000) will surely inspire anyone who is struggling with their own personal demons.

It's amazing that the Chili Peppers have been as successful as they are, considering their poor record management in the early days, the excessive personnel changes, and the rampant drug abuse. I'd love to read a tell-all from Flea next!

Who Knew???

I've read a lot of rock star bios and this one sticks. Why? Kiedis's unflinching honesty, graphic depiction of a life lived without structure and the fact that he has lived to tell the tale. It's all here. The drugs, the booze, the sex, the debauchery. So what, you might ask, is so unusual about that? Don't all rock star bios share these elements? Yeah, most of them do. But the difference here is Anthony Kiedis's story is a bloodletting without being preachy and full of predictable fluff. He never judges, he never steps up to the pulpit and warns the world. He never shoves 12 step sensibilities down anyones' throat. He tells his tale with charm, kid bravado and, surprisingly, humility. He admits his faults. He admits his immaturity. Through every chapter we watch him grow. He takes two steps forward, then ten steps back. Then he takes five steps forward and two steps back.

What I particularly found refreshing was the stories Kiedis tells about his inspirations for many Chili Pepper songs. Here is a man who cared (s) about the finished product. (If you doubt that, check out their latest effort, Stadium Arcadium. It's a masterpiece.)

You want to cry with Kiedis and you want to laugh with him during the entire bumpy ride. And I personally was wondering how his father was able to take a series of pictures of his eight year old son smoking pot without the folks over at the Fotomat running interference when he took them to be developed. Unless, of course, they were Polaroids. Then that point is moot I guess. Nevertheless, I hated his dad for the things he exposed Anthony to at such an early age. We're lucky Kiedis turned out as good as he did in the end.

Nevertheless, this is a rock star bio worth the effort. It's long, it's detailed, yes. Some details come off as too much information. But still, it's never a boring read. No fluff, no filler. Just a cautionary tale told with the best of intentions. And if he had to name his bio after a Pepper's song, Scar Tissue was the perfect choice.
