one of my favorite Christmas albums and Selah is for sure one of my favorite groups. If you love tight harmonies and strong lead vocals you will love this group. A little different flavor than most boring Christmas albums. Also, Dolly Parton makes a guest appearance on a beautiful Christmas song she personally wrote that I had never heard before. Selah was raised in North Africia and that shines through in their arrangments!

About the Author
Born in Havertown Pennsylvania, Tim Donaghy loved the game of basketball ever since he could remember. He received his love for the game from his father Gerry Donaghy, who had officiated at high school and collegiate level games for over thirty years. Since he lived so close to Philadelphia, he naturally became a 76ers fan. Some of his favorite players were Doug Collins and Mike Dunleavy. Donaghy attended Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Pennsylvania where he played competitively during his four years spent there. Following high school, Donaghy graduated from Villanova University with a liberal arts degree in 1989. Although Donaghy had a degree after his graduation, he became unsatisfied with the direction in which his career was headed. One night while sitting at the kitchen table with his parents, his mother suggested that he look into a career in the NBA. It was all the motivation that he needed, and began to pursue his new found dream job. Later as Tim Donaghy perfected his skills as a referee through training camps, he was noticed by the NBA supervisor of officials Darell Garretson. This eventually led to Tim Donaghys start in the CBA, the NBAs official minor league. He officiated for three years in the CBA. Before his fourth year Donaghy was called to officiate in the NBA. From 1994 to 2007 Tim Donaghy worked for the NBA, officiating in 772 regular-season games and 20 playoff games. Donaghy was a participant in the NBA's Read to Achieve program, for which he participated in an event at the Universal Charter school during the 2002 NBA Finals. His uniform number was 21

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "HE MAY HAVE FOULED OUT AS A REFEREE... BUT HE SCORES AS A WRITER!"

This is the memoir of disgraced former NBA referee Tim Donaghy. As most basketball fans know Donaghy pleaded guilty in federal court in 2008 to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting wagering information through interstate commerce. Donaghy delivers to the reader a no-holds-barred indoctrination of how a boy who not only grew up loving sports and dreaming of playing or refereeing in the NBA one day... but also looked up to his Father whose life as a high school and college referee was the embodiment of integrity. When Tim fulfills his childhood dream of becoming an NBA referee... he exalts in the fame and fortune that this position provides. He gets to rub shoulders with the likes of Jack Nicholson... Spike Lee... and countless other celebrities... in addition to having superstars like Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant... et al... currying to win favor from him... whether real or imagined... or what lies in between. In a painful self-evaluation the author paints a self-portrait of a man who literally became a degenerate gambling addict. In addition to contacts with childhood friends who became involved in organized crime and started "working" Donaghy for predictions of who would win specific NBA games... Donaghy slowly but inexorably... couldn't live without gambling. "MAKING 35 TO 40 BETS PER WEEK ON FOOTBALL, BASEBALL, BASKETBALL, AND HOCKEY, WE CONTINUED TO GAMBLE ON GOLF AT THE COUNTRY CLUB, CARDS IN THE BACK PARLOR, AND BLACKJACK IN THE CASINOS." Despite being a husband and Father of four young daughters... he lied to his wife and went to Atlantic City for binges at the casinos while telling his wife he was elsewhere.

But what was at the absolute despicable core of his illegal and immoral activity... was the inside information... that he was privy to as an NBA referee. And as a referee... the sanctity of the entire game... and league... rose and fell... at the hands of the referees. According to Tim... he never fixed a game... but he would call his associates... and at times... merely minutes before the game... to report unknown injuries... or team fatigue... to his organized crime cronies. In the author's defense... he does not for a minute deny his unsavory deeds... and his shame for the disgrace that he rained down on his entire family... from his Father... to his wife... to his kids... is palpable. But his admission of how easy it is to predict winners (he was right almost SEVENTY-PER-CENT of the time) based on numerous criteria... of which the most powerful tool he used in his betting "advice" was which referees were assigned to which games. And from here is where his proclamations draw the most attack by NBA commissioner David Stern and associates. Tim painstakingly describes over and over... which ref's had grudges against which players (such as Allen Iverson)... which ref's had grudges against which coaches... (and sometimes even owners)... which ref's had friendships with which coaches. Donaghy names names and gives example after example.

I played basketball at multiple levels in my life... and I am a basketball fanatic. I have been a season ticket holder and I read book after book on basketball... and watch it on cable and still attend games... so when I discuss the next portion of Donaghy's mea-culpa-combined-with-NBA- allegations... I'm not saying all of them are true... but his claims make sense... and I would say every allegation he makes... I have heard fans (including me) say AT LEAST ONE-HUNDRED-THOUSAND-TIMES!" He says there are two sets of rules. One for star players and one for non-stars... unless the ref of that game has a grudge against that star... and believe me he will make that star suffer on a particular night. The NBA *DOES* care about who is in the playoffs... and how many games a series goes. Ref's can easily effect the outcome of a game in so many ways... such as when "SHAQ" asked a ref before the game to let some air out of the game ball so he would get a softer roll on his brick-like free throws.

What pleasantly surprised me about this book... was that... despite the fact that I knew the ending... I found myself anxiously reading to the next chapter to learn the detailed steps of the author's journey to embarrassing ruin... which of course was federal prison.

Despite the fact that you will have a distaste for Donaghy because of his misuse of trust and responsibility... he openly admits his guilt and disgust with what he himself did to his life. When he has to call his beloved venerable Father to tell him of the crimes he's committed... you have to feel for him when he says:

"DAD, I'M IN SOME TROUBLE, A LOT OF TROUBLE."

So, I got this product after seeing it in a GenCon add and figured why not. I own soem of the other Kobold Guides to World Building and etc so I knew the style of a bunch of different artciles from different people. At first I was just going to go to the artciles that interested me most but then I just fell into reading each one from front to back, SO WELL DONE! The book tackles playing Evil Characters, how to put weirdness in your games (Think Horror or Lovecraft Weird), Complex plotting, Doing cliffhangers, and much more. The advice each person gives is super solid and really can fit into any type of RPG game that you would want to run (not just Heroic Fantasy).

Wouldn't it be great if you could sit down and pick the brain ...

Wouldn't it be great if you could sit down and pick the brain of some truly great and experienced GMs and game designers and learn how to improve your own GM sessions, whether you're doing prepared modules or homebrewed designs? Well, essentially, that's what you get with this Kobold Guide. Like others in the series, it's collection of essays that cover various topics. The downside to this format is that not everything will be related to what you're interested in. For instance, I ended up highlighting probably half of Kevin Kulp's "Oral Tradition" essay given how many useful tidbits it provided, while other essays weren't nearly as useful. Still, I suspect there's more than enough in this book to make it worth it for GMs of all levels of experience, and the advice is going to apply to any rule system that you happen to play.

Stage Meets Page ....

Sarah Kay's performance of "B" during her 2011 TedTalk brought down the house. I wasn't there, but, having watched the video any number of times, I have been consisently thrilled by her poetry, presence, and exuberant energy. This is a video I have shared via links with many people over the past year.

But ... I am a man with a heart rooted in "page poetry", and videos are not books, and videos make poor gifts for dear friends. So, how overjoyed was I to discover that a book version was in the making and would soon be published by Seth Grodin's Domino Project? Quite!

After a year of design and production, "B" has hit the shelves (somewhere, Amazon has shelves). Sarah Kay and her illustrator friend, Sophia Janowitz have put together a beautiful slim tome filled with Ms. Janowitz's charming drawings flowing around Ms. Kay's eloquent words.

a smartly done one-poem volume that charms and inspires

When poet Sarah Kay took the TED2011 stage, she began her TED Talk with the poem that is the sole focus on this illustrated book. At the conclusion of the poem's performance, the audience gave her a standing ovation (one of two she would earn for her talk!) and it's easy to see why. "B" is a letter from the poet to a future daughter, but in its beauty & thoughtfulness, it is also a celebration of what it is to be a woman: to be a mother and a daughter.

In explaining how she would mother her own daughter, Kay gives insight to everything she has learned in her life -- both on her own and from her mother. "Getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way / to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air." she explains in one section; "There's nothing more beautiful than the way / the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, / no matter how many times it's swept away," she offers in another. Kay is a storyteller who isn't afraid to make you laugh or smile, but is absolutely committed to being honest, to sincerity and authenticity. It makes for a fresh work, one that begs to be revisited -- which may explain why the talk has earned 1 million+ hits on the TED Talks website and another 500,000+ hits on YouTube (and surely growing).

After Kay's talk went viral and poetry lovers discovered both her & her work (numerous poems of hers appear on YouTube, earning her hundreds of thousands of hits), I am sure they went looking for print versions of her poetry. And there wasn't any -- until now. And I hope "B" is just the first in a series of books that the publisher, The Domino Project, will put out of Kay's work -- having just one poem available isn't enough!

Still, it's an absolutely worthy effort. As a spoken word poet, I'm sure it was a challenge to think of the best way to capture the bright energy that Kay brings to her performances and get it onto the page, but this smartly designed hardback book -- with its beautiful & delicately rendered pen & ink illustrations by Sophia Janowitz -- is a winner. It's a perfect way to experience the poem on page, as the illustrations and spacious layout allow each line and beat of the poem to be fully enjoyed and realized. And needless to say, it would make for a lovely gift as well!

I recommend this beautiful one-poem tome for anyone who is a fan of Kay or her work. Or anyone who needs a reminder that "this world is made / out of sugar: it can crumble so easily, but don't / be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it."

FOR A GOOD LAUGH, DIG INTO CAR CUISINE

One of the few books in recent years that has rendered me laughing out loud uncontrollably! it is great and especially fun if you have any nostalgia for old cars plus a familiarity with regional character around the US. (Right up there with Red Green and Garrison Keillor in my reality.) These guys actually approached the subject quite scientifically--well, in a way any engineer or mechanic would appreciate although there is no need to have any technical background to appreciate their sense of fun. BTW, I am 65+ female, so not your typical target audience. The book is worth every penny!

This is the neatest book I have ever read. My Friend is a gourmet book and she also thought it was great.
I am now really sorry I sold my Chevy van years ago which had a in-line six cylinder engine! (The Engine's Configuration Would Have Been Perfect)
The book does a great job in regards to preparing & positioning the food under the hood. The recipes are also great!
Also, one can prepare these tasty recipes in a conventional manner also, if the car is not available!

This book is written with humor along with ACTUAL recipes ie;
IMPRESSA VEAL IMPREZZA = cooking time is listed as 30 to 50 miles.

The recipe for a meal cooked on a foreign car's engine has a comical cooking time. =
Nifty Naffta Nachos "Distance about 60 miles or forever, Depending on the presence of the Federales".

It's well worth the price, if for nothing else than a conversation piece. I purchased three extras as gifts and all recipients loved them. We read them together over the phone with each person having their favorite parts. Three of us are planning to try the recipes!

Mark Mangan, Partner, Dechert LLP, Lucy Reed, Head of global international arbitration group, Freshfields, and John Choong, Partner, Freshfields.

Mark Mangan is a Singapore-based partner in the international law firm, Dechert LLP. Mark represents clients in complex cross-border disputes, often involving a government or political dimension, in various sectors, including oil and gas, mining, finance, and telecommunications. He has acted as counsel in over 25 commercial, investment treaty and sports arbitrations, and been appointed as arbitrator under the rules of various institutions (SIAC, ICC, LCIA and SCC) and as an ad hoc arbitrator under the Singapore International Arbitration Act. Mark is recommended in the Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2015 for his work in international arbitration in Singapore. In addition to writing A Guide to the SIAC Arbitration Rules, Mark's academic contributions include numerous published articles and book chapters on investment treaty arbitration, international commercial arbitration and sports arbitration. He presents regularly at seminars and conferences on those subjects. Mark is admitted to practice law in Australia, England and Wales, and is a fellow of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and the ICC task-force on the Role of Parties and their In-house Counsel in arbitration, and is an Advisory Board Member of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration.

Lucy Reed heads Freshfields' global international arbitration group, which is ranked at the top of the GAR 100, Chambers, Legal 500 and the AmLaw Scorecard. Lucy advises private and public clients on high-value commercial and investment treaty arbitrations, and sits selectively as arbitrator. Among her many publications, Lucy is co-author of the 1st and 2nd editions of the Guide to ICSID Arbitration, as well as the 2nd and 3rd editions of the Freshfields Guide to Arbitration Clauses in International Contracts (both published by Wolters Kluwer). Currently directing the Freshfields' international arbitration practice in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo, she has substantial experience in Asia, including as general counsel of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization, and in Asian-related arbitrations. Lucy is on the SIAC panel of arbitrators and serves on the LCIA Court and the new ICC Governing Body. She is Honorary Vice President of the American Society of International Law.

John Choong is a Partner in Freshfields' international arbitration group, and has had many years of experience dealing with disputes and arbitrations covering much of Asia (including Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, India, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and China). He has practiced arbitration in both Singapore and Hong Kong, and has been involved in many Singapore arbitrations, including those under the SIAC Rules and the SIAC Domestic Arbitration Rules. John is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, and has been listed as a leading individual for dispute resolution in Chambers Global. He is admitted in Singapore, Hong Kong and England and Wales, and is a Singapore country rapporteur for the ICC Task Force on the New York Convention. An outsatnding textbook!

I find this book probably the best textbook in materials science I ever read. Not only the authors are experts in the field of microscopy, but they also succeeded in extremely difficult task to present the complicated science of electron microscopy in a simple (but not oversimplified!) language. The book covers all major aspects of transmission electron microscopy, and contains excellent illustrations. This book is certainly a priceless asset for students. It is recommended as one of the best books at the beginning and intermediate level. If you are looking for a book to learn TEM, get this one, you will never regret!

Excellent introduction to TEM

In the 70's and 80's the book by Hirsch et al. was the TEM reference tome, and Eddington's book the applications manual.
Time has marched on, and this book is the new replacement for both!
Carter and Williams wrote a very easy to read, yet well detailed, text and reference for TEM. They cover quite literally everything, in just the right level of detail for 1st or 2nd year grad students.
This book is the best way to get a quick grasp of TEM.

This 4-volume set of paperback books provides a thorough and readable introduction to the science and practice of TEM (transmission electron microscopy). The text is divided into short, digestable sections, each accompanied by figures, graphs and plots. The equations are numerous, but well explained and presented with minimal derivations but full explanations. The books are divided into concise sections making it easy for the reader to find what he/she needs. Overall, a perfect textbook to learn about TEM, and as a reference for those more experienced in this field.

If you lack a controls, differential equations and linear algeabra background this book isn't for you. My prof at the time was a co-author and I wanted to see what his work was like. This book is informational since alot of newer books assume you have access to simulink and matlab. This book shows you how to calculate your bit sampling requirements and what the outputs look like if your bit length is too short.
