Fall of Five - the lull before the storm

Come one, come all to Fouke, Arkansas' Monster Mart - you must've seen the online adverts - and take a peek at the infamous Boggy Creek Monster, the creature what's part man, part bear, and part gorilla. And maybe you can even catch a glimpse of Number Five, the final surviving member of the Garde we've yet to meet. In Fouke, Arkansas, outside Monster Mart, is where John and Six find him moments before the Mogadorian troops descend. And when the skirmish ends and the dust settles and you look at the blasted bits of Arkansas landscape, there's only one thing to say: "Fouke!"

THE FALL OF FIVE is the fourth book in the Lorien Legacies saga, and why would you think the author(s) would take the foot off the pedal? Sure, there are moments of respite. Even these alien teens need to catch their breath. But I love the overall pacing of the book. And those times when things do pick up, the pace achieves this hurtling locomotion. As the book opens, the Garde is back in Chicago and has sort of recovered from their collective butts getting handed to them by Setrákus Ra, terrifying leader of the Mogadorians. Some of the kids are getting restless (looking at you, Nine) and are once more, to quote an older generation, full of beans. John Smith a.k.a. Number Four - now the team's uncontested leader - decides to sanction a field op to go fetch the elusive Number Five.

I never thought I'd say this - and maybe this'll touch off a raw nerve - but the last time I was this invested in a YA series with such a huge cast, it was Harry Potter. I care what happens to John Smith and to Six and Marina and the others (yes, even Nine who somehow grew on me). The story doesn't waste time in picking up a plot thread that had been dangling since the end of THE POWER OF SIX. "Pittacus Lore" - of whom collaborators Jobie Hughes and James Frey deny knowledge - weaves in some nice character beats. The characters' distinct personalities make for dramatic (and combustible) interplay. For example, Nine's innate combativeness plays off in interesting ways against Four's take-charge mentality and Eight's fun-loving nature. It's also gratifying that John's human girlfriend, Sarah Hart, evolves into someone who can handle herself in a melee. So, yeah, it says something positive that I don't at all mind those scenes in which the Garde are just hanging out in Nine's massively tricked-out Chicago penthouse, whether squabbling or fretting, training, or striking up friendships.

Make no mistake, this series' calling card is the epic, cinematic fighty fight. It's when that crazy superhero flavor really kicks in, and you salivate about seeing this transferred to the big screen. (Is it too masochistic to hope for a film sequel or a remake? Teresa Palmer as "Six" was awesome!)

Fourth book in a projected set of seven, FALL OF FIVE resolves a plot thread or two but then introduces several new story arcs (the intro of Five, Ella's crippling nightmares, a surprising Mogadorian, etc.). More is revealed about the Garde's legacies and the contents of their heritage chests. You should anticipate a doozy of a cliffhanger. You should realize that these stories wouldn't mean as much if there weren't shattering consequences. The narrative is told from the alternating perspectives of John Smith, Marina, and Sam Goode. If you're as immersed into the story as I was, you won't have any trouble keeping track of who's narrating at any given moment. I did note a few grammatical lapses, but, mostly, the editor's been on his P's and Q's. FALL OF FIVE had me tearing thru the pages, even during those slower "day in the life" moments. Strongest and best series I have read.

I loved this book. I feel like it had a lot of suspense throught and I never felt bored. Has a lot of fast passed action wich made it very hard to put down a quality had to find in books no and which I LOVE!
Noticed that most of the bad reviews this book got we're from people dissapointed in some of the results. C'mon guys, they are fighting a war! Can't expect it to be all unicorns and rainbows!

Worth the Read

Having read all of the series so far, they keep getting better and keep you on the edge of your seat. Written for teens, adults will enjoy too. No sex or bad language, just a really great plot and read. Even my husband enjoys the series. Both of us are retired.
Highly recommend for anyone of any age.

A must have resource!

In two thorough yet easily accesible volumes, Patrick Barone lays out the factors involved in representing individuals with driving under the influence.

As a criminal defense lawyer for (well) over twenty years, I can tell you that driving under the influence cases can be more demanding than even most felonies.

An honest provider of legal services, I tell my incoming driving under the influence clients that they face a steeper challenge to obtaining victory than in most other cases. This is because either by blood or breath testing it is so easy for the police to secure incriminating evidence against the alleged violators. Also, more routinely now than ever before, police squad cars are equipped with video surveillance equipment to prove that the person in question was both driving and driving (usually) very poorly.

Accordingly, the cases where I have either prevailed at jury trial on these matters or more frequently on pre trial motion have been among the most hard won victories in my entire career. In this regard, I'm proud to say that in this area where the evidence has shown someone to be wrongfully accused, the system has recognized it and provided that individual with exoneration. This is not a product particularly of my skills but rather the inherent fairness of a process that has taken now over two centuries to refine...our American legal tradition.

That being said, this is an excellent resource and more than worth the nominal investment required to purchase it.

Easy to Understand and Thorough

When I first started 'The Complete Guide to Spotting Accounting Fraud & Cover-Ups' by Martha Maeda, I thought I was going to be bored. Actually, this book is quite fascinating. It promises to be easy to read, and it lives up to that promise, even for someone who'd had no background in accounting or finances. There are plenty of examples, including the cases of Bernard Madoff and Martha Stewart and examples from Coca-Cola, AOL, the International Olympic Committee, and more that show how the lessons apply to real life. As a psychology major, I found the discussion of psychopathic personality disorder in business especially fascinating.

This book is also very thorough. It discusses in detail the different kinds of frauds that are most likely to occur, why the occur, and who is most likely to be involved in them. More important, it details the ways owners of businesses large and small and investors can keep an eye out for the various kinds of fraud. Numerous resources went into researching this book, and Maeda shares the particularly valuable and user-friendly resources with the reader. According to the introduction, organizations in the USA lose about 7% of their annual revenue to fraud, or an estimated $994 billion total. For these reasons, anyone who runs a business or a charity (even church groups) or who has investments should read through it at least once.

Useful introduction to detect ocupational frauds

This book has two parts: ocupational fraud and financial fraud. I liked a lot the first part, dealing with ocupational fraud and how employees manipulate the books to cover it up. One key issue with ocupational fraud is to cook the books to cover up the theft. Otherwise, it woulld be short lived. Very interesting and well written. I think that small and medium size business will find useful tips to avoid and detect being robbed by their employees.
The second part of the book, dealing with finanacial fraud is less interesting. Basically is an introduction to financial audit written by someone who does not seem to be an auditor. Being an expert in accounting and taxes I found this second part too basic.

Really helpful book!

My husband is a great guy; however he is way too gullible. He believes in every get-rich-quick scheme that comes his way, and the last time I looked we were far from rich. In fact, I would like to have the money back he has lost by those who have bilked him out of a few bucks - some being employees he knew and trusted. Since getting back what we lost probably won't happen, I have bought him this book so we can finish paying for our child's braces and save for college. While not all get-rich-quick-schemes are fraud and not all employees steal, he needs to know how to spot fraud and how to protect our finances.Martha Maeda explains that "fraud is the theft of assets from a company or individual through the manipulation and abuse of legitimate processes." This can make it difficult to detect because it seems so above-board - and it can happen to anyone. Financial savvy victims of Bernie Madoff did not think they were giving their money to a crook. For years they believed their money was safe. It wasn't. His Ponzi scheme was eventually uncovered and many people lost their life's savings. You can prevent this from happening to you.

In this book Ms. Maeda makes clear to us layman What Fraud is, Who Commits Fraud, How Fraud is Detected, What Financial Statement Fraud is, How to Spot Accounting Fraud in an Organization, the Seven Different Types of Financial Statement Manipulations, How to Prevent Fraud and How to Assess and Conduct an Investigation on Fraud. She also points out to us what Asset Misappropriation and Embezzlement are and how to spot Fraudulent Disbursements. It is no wonder that average people like me just don't get how complicated and established financial larceny is. This is why we all need this book. Ms. Maeda has explained in very understandable details what we need to know. This is a book I will buy for other family members and keep handy for years. I was surprised at how much I didn't know about accounting fraud and financial cover-ups and am delighted to finally find a book that explains it all to me - and my husband - so we will never be in the dark again. A valuable and necessary book for everyone, I want to thank Ms. Maeda for enlightening me. I will never be without this book, and neither will my husband. I'll make sure of that.

About the Author

Eric Jensen is a former teacher and current member of the Society for Neuroscience and New York Academy of Sciences. He has taught at all levels, from elementary through university level and is currently completing his PhD in human development. In 1981, Jensen cofounded SuperCamp, the nation’s first and largest brain-compatible learning program, now with over 50,000 graduates. He has since written Teaching with the Brain in Mind, Brain-Based Learning, Deeper Learning, Arts with the Brain in Mind, Enriching the Brain, and 21 other books on learning and the brain. A leader in the brain-based movement, Jensen has made over 45 visits to neuroscience labs and interacts with countless neuroscientists. He was the founder of the Learning Brain EXPO and has trained educators and trainers for 25 years worldwide in this field. He is deeply committed to making a positive, significant, lasting difference in the way we learn.

Get off the dead horse of "old school" education

To those seeking an outline of what education needs to practice so "no child is left behind" this book is a starting point about how people learn. The flow of the book is easy to follow and considers the research findings of how the brain learns in stages of life. Unlike those who consider brain research a "fad", I know from application of the knowledge in this book, the influential changes do produce positive results for students. In the world of "accountability" the tools of Brain Based teaching will allow students and teachers a solution in "leveling the field" for the students from less fortunate environments, which politicians are clueless about in regards the obstacles of "survivalists of poverty". I highly reccommend this book to those wishing to "get off the dead horse" and provide a productive environment for education in the 21st century.

Introductory Essays to a Major 20th Century Theologian

An excellent introduction to Tillich's core concepts, such as religion as ultimate concern, the notion of idolatry, his survey of existentialist philosophy, and the mediation of culture and language. Especially good intro essays are "Aspects of a Religious Analysis of Culture," "The Nature of Religious Language," and "Existential Philosophy: Its Historical Meaning." Some of the collected essays seem designed merely to flesh out the volume, while others (such as Tillich's cultural comparison essays) are outdated or embarassingly provincial. Recommended reading for college philosophy and theology texts, as well as anyone seeking to grasp why Tillich's concepts are still useful (if slightly outdated) today.

Tough, challenging, but worth the work

My old college Latin wasn't quite up to some of the work thrust upon it in the early chapters of this book. But stay with it, the Latin disperses like an early morning fog as you get deeper into the volume. I found it very useful. Tillich is father to much of post-modern Protestant theology, it appears.... and probably uncle to a chunk of our new-age thought as well.

This book is mainly devoted to finite difference numerical methods for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) models of pricing a wide variety of financial derivative securities. With this objective, the book is divided into two main parts.

In the first part, after an introduction concerning the basics on derivative securities, the authors explain how to establish the adequate PDE boundary value problems for different sets of derivative products (vanilla and exotic options, and interest rate derivatives). For many option problems, the analytic solutions are also derived with details. The second part is devoted to explaining and analyzing the application of finite differences techniques to the financial models stated in the first part of the book. For this, the authors recall some basics on finite difference methods, initial boundary value problems, and (having in view financial products with early exercise feature) linear complementarity and free boundary problems. In each chapter, the techniques related to these mathematical and numerical subjects are applied to a wide variety of financial products. This is a textbook for graduate students following a mathematical finance program as well as a valuable reference for those researchers working in numerical methods in financial derivatives. For this new edition, the book has been updated throughout with many new problems added. More details about numerical methods for some options, for example, Asian options with discrete sampling, are provided and the proof of solution-uniqueness of derivative security problems and the complete stability analysis of numerical methods for two-dimensional problems are added.
