"A ghost story should never end perfectly. That is my rule of thumb. After investigating ghost experiences for nearly thirty years, I realised that the finely polished stories told by storytellers and “ghost walkers” were exactly that – polished. In polishing stories we lose the personality of the haunted and indeed the haunter itself, that’s why in my books, research papers and articles, I always maintain the original testaments and facts.

The stories that I have collected for you now are rough diamonds, totally unpolished and any additions by myself are kept to a minimum and noted clearly.

As I began to compile these stories I began to realise that I was actually becoming very affected by them and I am sure you will too. There is no doubt you will have your favourites once you have read the book, but mine are as follows. One of the standout stories for me, is “The Ghost with no mouth” – a series of terrifying experiences in a modern house in which the witness’s child describes the ghost as having “no mouth and wears black boots but is naughty”. The experiences were very real to the family involved, and you wonder if “Black Square” continues to haunt this dwelling.

Another story “The Mystery Lady” is downright creepy, a man encounters a strange woman on a deserted train station, she mumbles to herself and refuses to get on board the last train to Portsmouth. The next day he discovers that he was actually talking to a ghost! I spare you the details so not to spoil the story, but you will certainly have a chill!

In total there are fifty real experiences with ghosts and spirits included in this book and all direct from the witnesses themselves. None of them wanted their names publishing or any publicity about their experiences but all of them had the need to share, and share they have done."

About the Author
MJ Wayland is a writer, researcher and historian specialising in ghosts, supernatural belief and fringe history. His research has appeared in dozens of publications and he has consulted and appeared in over one hundred television programmes and documentaries. During the last ten years he has lectured internationally as well as appearing at The Sunday Times Literature Festival (along side Professor Bruce Hood) and various festivals and universities across the UK. MJ Wayland’s interest in the paranormal, especially ghosts, began at an early age after experiencing a number of unusual incidents that his peers could not explain. In his early teens he joined various research societies and began to study the multiple facets to the paranormal with a scientific and historical viewpoint. His research has taken him from dark haunted castles of Britain to the haunted graveyards of New Orleans, investigating his primary love of ghosts to sightings of black panthers. Since the mid-1990s, MJ Wayland has provided consultancy for TV, film and theatre as well as appearing in local, national, international newspapers, radio and TV. He is the author of eight best-selling books, “50 Real Ghost Stories” holding the Amazon top 10 bestselling Paranormal book for the second consecutive Halloween in 2013. More recently he provided consultancy for the forthcoming Hammer film “The Quiet Ones” due April 2014.

Interesting, but not spooky.

It was alright. Some of the stories are really good, but a lot of them are only about 2 pages long. Very short. And they aren't too riveting or spooky. If you are the kind of person who is spooked very easily, this could be the book for you. If you are an avid believer in the supernatural or are just looking to read a few stories at night before bed to give yourself a riveting scare, I wouldn't get this one. Yes the stories are interesting, and I can relate to a few of them, but none really have much pizazz or fright to them.

True Ghost Stories

These true ghost stories are from the UK, but they could happen anywhere. These stories take place in houses, cemeteries, on the road -- all around the town. They may not be especially frightening, but they do let you know you're not alone. You may remember a similiar experience after you read some of these stories. Alvarez breathes life into these historical figures--known as "las mariposas," or "the butterflies," in the underground--as she imagines their teenage years, their gradual involvement with the revolution, and their terror as their dissentience is uncovered.

During the last days of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, three young women, members of a conservative, pious Catholic family, who had become committed to the revolutionary overthrow of the regime, were ambushed and assassinated as they drove back from visiting their jailed husbands. Thus martyred, the Mirabal sisters have become mythical figures in their country, where they are known as las mariposas (the butterflies), from their underground code names. Herself a native of the Dominican Republic, Alvarez ( How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents ) has fictionalized their story in a narrative that starts slowly but builds to a gripping intensity. Each of the girls--Patria, Minerva and Maria Terese (Mate) Mirabal--speaks in her own voice, beginning in their girlhood in the 1940s; their surviving sister, Dede, frames the narrative with her own tale of suffering and dedication to their memory. To differentiate their personalities and the ways they came to acquire revolutionary fervor, Alvarez takes the risk of describing their early lives in leisurely detail, somewhat slowing the narrative momentum. Alvarez's award-winning first novel (How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, LJ 5/1/91) is more than matched by her second. Butterflies is based on the lives of the four Mirabel sisters (code name: "Mariposas," that is, butterflies), three of whom were martyred in 1960 during the liberation of the Dominican Republic from the dictator Trujillo. Through the surviving sister, Dede, as well as memories of Minerva, Patria, and Maria Teresa, we discover the compelling forces behind each sister's role in the struggle for freedom. As Alvarez says "A novel is not, after all, a historical document, but a way to travel through the human heart." Though murder, torture, and imprisonment are ever-present, she wisely choses to focus on the personal lives of these young wives and mothers, full of love, beauty, and, especially, hope. Highly recommended for its luminescence and relevance.

I also lived Trujillo

As a Dominican who lived under Trujillo's dictatorship until his ovethrowing in 1961, I was very taken by Ms. Alvarez' book. Her portrayal of Dominican family life is accurate and lifelike. I remember the trial for the murder of the Mirabal sisters--it was the first televised trial in the history of the D.R. I am also a niece by marriage of General Federico Fiallo who is portrayed in the book, and although as an adult I know he committed heinous crimes under Trujillo's orders, I also want to say that in his private life he was a kind man to his nieces and nephews. He committed suicide when they came to arrest him at his home. All around me when I was a child was the specter of Trujillo and his spies and enforcers. The terror we citizens endured was quite real although we managed to live normal everyday lives. His hand was everywhere. Ms. Alvarez book put into perspective many things that from the point of view of a child you see but fail to digest.

A Literary Challenge

By means of the sharpened scalpel of fiction, Julia Alvarez carves and shapes the central characters in this difficult and delicate novel as subversive agents who see themselves obligated by fate to participate in the ultimate demise of an oppressive regime. Minerva, Patria, María Teresa, and Dedé, each one in her distinct fashion, break through the tyrannical grip that holds sway over an entire island population for thirty-one nightmarish years. Alvarez is at her absolute best here, far surpassing the previously successful HOW THE GARCÍA GIRLS LOST THEIR ACCENTS. Even the more recent SALOMÉ, in my view, doesn't come across as powerfully (especially for those readers unfamiliar with Dominican cultural history). IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES is a masterful work that illustrates the perniciousness of political oppression in every aspect of a society, written in a language of turbulent calmness. As a Dominican myself who experienced first hand the unspeakable horrors of the Trujillo Dictatorship, I admit honestly that Alvarez has presented brilliantly the case of repression and heroism more formidably than any other writer. She has officially immortalized las hermanas Mirabal as national heroines.

Enthralling and gripping . . . thank you, Julia Alvarez!!!

Julia Alvarez does a brilliant job blending fact and fiction. The story of the Mirabal sisters is brought to life by Alvarez's extraordinary style of writing. I just can't find the right words to describe this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat, unable to put it down, wanting to read more and more. At times it is humorous and delightful, at others sad and horrific.
It is written from the perspective of each sister: the pious and religious Patria (the oldest), the strong and fiesty Minerva (I love her best), the sensitive yet willful Maria Theresa, and Dede - the one who lived. The one who realized her strength and independence despite her doubts. Even though it is Dede who was not killed in the ambush on "the lonely mountain road," it is really all four women who are survivors; Patria, Mate, and Minerva lost their lives, yet their spirits and their courage live on. Through Dede they live on. Perhaps that is why she was not killed - to live to tell her sisters' stories as well as her own. Dede has always wondered why she escaped death, why she wasn't killed; interviewers always ask her that, yet she does not know why. But I believe that is the reason: she could tell their story.
It is interesting how different and diverse the four sisters' personalities are, yet I see a bit of each one in every woman. Patria, the hopeful; Minerva, the feminist; Maria Theresa, the giver; and Dede, the unsure yet strong.
What's more I learned of the dictator Trujillo and what was like to have lived under his regime. I never knew about him, never even heard of him until I read this book. This made me want to read and learn more not only about the Mirabal sisters, but about Trujillo ("El Jefe"). I love to read a book of fiction and learn about historical events - about people who actually existed and made a difference despite everything going against them. I learned of a period of history in a country that I knew nothing about (The Dominican Republic [I wonder why it's called that?] as well as a dictator I never heard of. For that, I thank Julia Alvarez.
This is one of the best books I have ever read, and I recommend it highly for everyone - men and women, Dominican and non-Dominican, young and old. It is an inspiring read.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED--should be required reading for every American so they have a better understanding of our neighbors to the south. I bought this when I first met my wife who is from Mexico. I found it very enlightening and worth every cent. It's easy to read since it is not in-depth, however, it is still very enlightening. It talks about real Mexico and real Mexicans--not the life and culture that surrounds resorts. It may need to be updated (10 years old) cause the youth in Mexico are greatly influenced by media (TV, movies, etc) today just as American youth are--however, it still provides great insight of where Mexicans are coming from.

I traveled to Mexico with Dr. Heusinkveld as a participant on one of her study abroad trips to the city where she wrote the book. I soon found out that not only is the book a must read for anyone interested in visiting or doing business in Mexico, but that the information that was published over 10 years ago is still very accurate in much of the country.

The book is a very easy read and not long at all. Its small size is very deceptive because the book is crammed with information that one should not go without.

Do not travel to Mexico without this book.

There'd be less misunderstanding if more of us read this gem

I've read and re-read this short book, and it has helped me tremendously to understand Mexico and Mexicans. Their culture is different enough from ours that our habits don't always work.For example, in the chapter on manners, the author points out that people often thank shop clerks when leaving a store. I tried this on a recent trip and discovered that it could lead to enjoyable short conversations.
Published in 1994, I found it very timely in 2003.

About the Author

John J. Crowley is president and CEO of Cancer Research and Biostatistics (CRAB), Seattle, Washington, director of the SWOG Statistical Center, and a faculty member at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The author or coauthor of more than 350 refereed articles, book chapters, and other publications, Dr. Crowley is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the International Biometrics Society, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. He received his BA (1968) from Pomona College, Claremont, California, and his MS (1970) and PhD (1973) in biomathematics from the University of Washington, Seattle.

Antje Hoering, PhD, is a senior biostatistician at Cancer Research and Biostatistics (CRAB), Seattle, Washington. She is also an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington and an affiliate investigator at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Hoering is the lead statistician of the SWOG Myeloma Committee, the SWOG Early Therapeutics Subcommittee, and the Stand Up To Cancer, Pancreatic Dream Team. She is the coordinating statistician for the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, the International Myeloma Committee, and the Pancreatic Cancer Research Team. She serves as a consultant on a variety of industry-sponsored studies and has been the biostatistics representative on two Type B meetings with the FDA. She is member of the American Statistical Association, the International Biometrics Society, and the International Myeloma Society. She received her BS (1985) from the University of Tubingen, Germany, her MS (1988) in physics from Oregon State University, Corvallis, and her PhD (1991) in physics from the Max Planck Institute for Theoretical Nuclear Physics, Heidelberg, Germany. She transitioned into biostatistics with a three-year NRSA postdoctoral fellowship with the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Not Just For Lovers

This book is not just for lovers. This book is for any one engage in an intimate relationship. Ellen G White exposes the intense emotions involved in relationships and how all those emotions can be used by the devil for our destruction. I saw glimpses of myself as well as loved ones in this book; Ellen G White combines her narrative along with actual letters she wrote in her era to the people in her life of importance. Her letters are written with love and admonishment, their focus is always to redirect the wandering straying lovers attention back to Christ's. One can never overlook the power of emotions play in our lives and how without discipline our emotions can lead to our own destruction. I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling in an unhealthy relationship.

About the Author
Carol S. Cairns, CPMSM, CPCS has been in the unique position of seeing and participating in the development of the medical staff services profession for more than 40 years. In 1996, she founded Plainfield, Illinois based PRO-CON, a consulting firm specializing in credentialing, privileging, medical staff organization operations, and survey preparation. In 1991, Cairns became clinical faculty for The Joint Commission by collaborating in the development of an educational program on credentialing and privileging medical staff and allied health professionals. From 1996 to 2006, Cairns served the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a surveyor in the certification program for CVOs. Cairns was invited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide input into the development of the medical staff and allied health professional standards for the 2005 Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program Manual.

Kathy Matzka, CPMSM, CPCS is a consultant and speaker with 25 years of experience in credentialing, privileging, and medical staff services. Matzka worked for 13 years as a hospital medical staff coordinator before venturing out on her own as an independent consultant, writer, and speaker. She has performed extensive work with NAMSS library team, developing and editing educational materials related to the field, including CPCS and CPMSM certification exam preparatory courses; CPMSM and CPCS professional development workshops; and NAMSS core curriculum. She also serves as an instructor for NAMSS. Matzka is a highly regarded industry speaker, and in this role has developed and presented numerous programs for professional associations, hospitals, and hospital associations on a wide range of topics, including provider credentialing and privileging, medical staff meeting management, peer review, negligent credentialing, provider competency, and accreditation standards.
