Beautiful, honest, naked, inspiring.

I don't usually read auto-biographies, downloaded Shoe Dog on a whim and could not put it down until I reached the very last page. The final chapter materialized through a curtain of tears.

Knight's story is intriguing, his words so straight and bare that I feel I've made a new friend.

Read this if you are an entrepreneur (or married to one), an athlete, an adventurer, or simply a human. This is not the story of a company, but of the souls and persons, great adventures and struggles behind the brand.

I love this book

I love this book. I read an advance copy a few months ago and was really taken with the charm, humor and wisdom of the narrative voice. I'm sure a lot of people will buy this book hoping for a how-to guide on founding a bold, innovative corporation. Those people won't be disappointed, for there's lots here on the topic of creative thinking, risk taking and dream chasing. But for me, the book was a beautiful reflection on youth, vision, caprice, doggedness, good cheer and a profound competitive spirit. Knight is a natural storyteller, and he looks back on his early days as an entrepreneur with clarity, wonder and humor. I laughed on nearly every page, but the portrait that emerges is one of a young man with little but a dream to anchor him, a mentor to guide him and an unshakable belief that he can actually make it all work. Most important, it's love that gives the entire enterprise purpose. That's inspiring.

TRULY A "FIVE-STAR" READ

Well written, historically-accurate biographies are among my favorite genres ... and I expect many others as well. While I didn't know Phil Knight's name or recognize his many achievements prior to reading the publisher's profile of this book before ordering it for my personal e-reader, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the outstanding job of publishing and interesting story behind this modern "Horatio Alger" success story; in addition to being a fascinating "behind-the-scene" accounting of "Nike's" remarkable climb to excellence. Knight is clearly an interesting, funny, brilliant individual ... the proof of which becomes abundantly clear throughout this excellent book.

Nabokov fans will be disappointed by narrator Stefan Rudnicki's stiff, staid performance in this audio version of the author's 13th novel. Told in a series of vignettes, the story follows Russian immigrant and professor Timofey Pavlovich Pnin as he boards the wrong train on his way to deliver a lecture, loses his luggage, struggles with the English language, hunts for living quarters, deals with his ex-wife, and throws a faculty party. Rudnicki's narration is clear and steady, but fails to capture the playfulness of Nabokov's prose and the humor of the text. Instead, Rudnicki's tone is variously stiff, needlessly booming, or monotone. He does, however, provide a wide range of voices for the cast of characters. His rendition of the title character-which sounds like a hybrid of Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat and Soviet comedian Yakov Smirnoff-is dynamic and entertaining. Listeners will be left wishing Rudnicki had infused more of his narration with those qualities. (Nov.)

Good character study

This is an interesting character study of an immigrant professor of Russian studies, who came to the US from Russia, and teaches at a fictitious college in the 1st half of the 20th century. The writing is beautiful. Don't look for a definitive beginning and ending to this story while reading it. It is a series of episodes, amusing at times, centering around the main character, Pnin.
As I am somewhat familiar with Russian culture of that generation, and have known several Russian immigrants, it was sort of nostalgic for me.
I enjoyed it very much. I gave it only 4 stars because I admit once in a while it got a little tedious.

To be placed among the best novellas.

This is the first Nabokov I have experienced, and it has kindled (I should be compensated by that plug) further exploratory interests. I had never known Nabokov was so good a writer; actually, he is better than good, if I may be so bold from a single reading. Nabokov steadfastly belongs with that long-lined confederacy of Russian writers that have proven their artistic mettle. With Pnin, attentive reading will be needed to unearth the symbolism inherent therein a casual reading will miss. This is an art-work for both the casual reader and the intellectual detective, the latter will obtain the most from its digestion. Though not pulp fiction, ironically its emergence comes unto us from that incipient structure of the the story-installment magazine form (a la Dickens, et.al.). Pnin marks the story of a Russian emigre from the Bolshevik Revolution to America and his difficulties at blending-in to Americana as a professor of Russian Literature via the ''campus story'' sub-genre of fiction -- among the first of such experiments. The story is told from an omniscient Narrator, who knows Timofey Pnin and is himself a character introduced late in the novella. It is difficult to tell whether the Narrator is a friend or the nemesis of Pnin, for the latter is ''skewered'' in farcical scorn form. The Narrator treats of Pnin non-heroically, yet one gets glimpses here (from Pnin's) interior senses, he is heroic (in the sense of noble, self-sacrificing, and altruistic. Who does the Reader believe? A bathetic Pnin from the Narrator's perspective or empathetic Pnin from a close reading? Does the Life of Pnin truly fall apart or does he bounce back as he meets yet another life-changing experience at the ending? The reader will exit with questions of his/her own about the symbolism and metaphor permeating the novella -- What of the squirrels? The ant? The dogs? other animalia?

Brilliantly tragic and comic

Having never read anything by Nabokov before, on the strength of Amazon reviewers, and as an academic, I was intrigued by _Pnin_. The similarities between the fictional Pnin and his creator are many: both are Russian emigres, both teach at Eastern universities (Pnin at Waindell, Nabokov at Cornell, Wellsley and Harvard); however, while Timofei Pnin has difficulty ("dzeefeecooltsee") with English, while Nabokov was a master. Perhaps Nabokov uses Pnin as a foil to to highlight the silliness of academia and the petty intrigue and drama that is such a staple of university life. Whether or not this was his intent, the book is delightful.

Pnin himself is at once both a comic and tragic character - an emigre who does not wholly fit in his adopted country, but who has a passion for his subject (Russian language and literature); an academic who is unknowingly a laughingstock, but who also is a hopeless romantic, hoping a lost lover will return, trying to do right by her son from another man.

What struck me most powerfully, however, was Nabokov's brilliant way with words - not only the Russian and German (which was liberally sprinkled throughout the book) - but of English as well: "One had to forget - because one could not live with the thought that this graceful, fragile, tender youhng woman with those eyes, that smile, those gardens and snows in the background, had been brought in a cattle car to an extermination camp and killed by an injection ... into the heart, into the gentle heart one had heard beating under one's lips in the dusk of the past." (p 135)

Nabokov skewers academic politics, professors who take themselves entirely too seriously, and even students (the "typical American college student who does not know geography, is immune to noise, and thinks education is but a means to get eventually a remunerative job." (pp125 - 6). Yet this is done with such tenderness and gentleness through the character of Pnin, that one hardly notices the sharp edge beneath the words.

Pnin himself is loveable and sweet, largly because he is such a fish out of water, with such good intentions that are too often misunderstood. I thorougly enjoyed _Pnin_ in equal measure for Nabokov's way with words as for his satire of academic life, and I look forward to reading more by him. Highly recommended.

A great starting point

This book is a great starting point if you are considering a cycling trip to New Zealand.
Unfortunately this book is getting old and the road conditions and amenities along the way have changed. But it is still a good timetable for figuring out how long you should think about it taking this cycle the different places in New Zealand.

Useful book, although not essential. Basically biking in NZ is easy because there are only a few roads, once you get out of the cities. The book doesn't have enough detail in it to eliminate the need for maps.... I'd say that reading blogs and getting maps would be a better use of time than getting this book, but it is nice to have a few itineraries suggested.

In February '97 me, my bike, and this book covered 1300 miles of New Zealand. I used this book extensively to plan my route by mixing & matching the routes covered in the book. obtw, in New Zealand you don't need a map, you only have a couple of roads to choose from and this book covers just about everything you need. I highly recommend it and appreciate the effort Bruce put into the book.

Pervasive prejudice exposed

John Keene graphically documents the evil of slavery, not only the institution per se, but further in the way the institution generates cascading evil in individual acts. An evil institution provokes, enables, or reveals the evil individual potential in a self-reinforcing vicious circle. The persecuted victim is often the source of moral redemption, as with Carmel in ‘Gloss’ and Theodore in ‘The Aeronauts’, evoking a Christ motif, whilst never legitimising the initial evil.

Keene has an amazing gift of recreating the literary style of a particular era and culture, a device which creates affinity with the reader. In ‘Rivers’ he suggests racial prejudice in Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer character. In ‘Persons and Places’ racial prejudice perverts Harvard’s academia. All American life is compromised. In the later stories, Keene offers streams of consciousness where prejudice remains a dominant influence. In ‘The Lions’ he shows that evil operates within, as well as between, ethnic groups. It’s a powerful, significant, but depressing read. Hopefully humanity can reflect and raise its act, but this will need a deeply spiritual purification.

MY FAVORITE BOOK OF THE YEAR, THUS FAR

While at my all-time favorite bookstore, City Lights, I told the lady working the desk I'd never purchased a book there I did't enjoy. And that goes back decades of shopping with the store. I asked her recommendation, and she said, "If I had to pick one book to keep on a deserted island to read and re-read, it'd be Counternarratives, Stories and Novellas by John Keene."
On that statement I made the purchase. I've extended my read into weeks just to savor every page, line, word. Truly it's an intricate masterpiece, and the most eye-opening journey through African-American culture, portraying witchcraft to arts to politics to religion.

In describing sights, sounds, and even the personal appearance and quirks of many of the people he encountered, Henry of Livonia provides us with an invaluable and deeply human history.The pope´s call for a renewed holy war at the end of the twelfth century inspired not only the famous crusades in the Middle East but also a series of less celebrated yet decidedly more successful Northern Crusades. Scandinavian rulers and German military monks conquered and settled the Baltic world, spreading Western values and Christianity. At the time, the region of Livonia (present-day Estonia and Latvia) was a crossroads of Germanic, Scandinavian, and Russian trade, culture, and religion. The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia provides insight into not only military operations in the East during this tumultuous period but also the conflicted attitudes of an eyewitness, revealing the complex melding of religious motives with political aims.

James A. Brundage is Ahmanson-Murphy Distinguished Professor of History emeritus at the University of Kansas. He is the author of numerous books on medieval history, including The Crusades, Medieval Canon Law, and Law, Sex, and Christian Society in Medieval Europe.

The serial killing of illegitimate newborn infants is prompted by the delusions of people who place their faith in an unhinged television minister, himself the killer of a teenage mistress. Add the doings of a local band of Satanists, and you have cross-current of mayhem that baffles and mortally endangers ambitious Kansas State Police Field Agent Nikki O’Keefe.

Author Riley Evans draws on his experience as a country lawyer to realistically enliven the inhabitants of fictional Pawnee Bend, Kansas.

I wasn’t thinking of politics or ‘moral values’ when I wrote Devil May Care. Recent events have left me wondering whether my fiction comes uncomfortably close to fact. The book took shape over several years. When I started writing it, I could never have imagined a day in which the politics of our country would be driven by moralistic religious zeal.

Devil May Care is a crime novel, entirely fictional, in which the murderers justify their crimes as the will of the Lord.

The novel’s villain, Reverend Jack Jackson, is a charismatic, body-building televangelist who twists an obscure passage from the Bible into a warped theology that leads his followers to commit unspeakable crimes.

At the same time, the murderous reverend justifies his own acts of lechery and mayhem as part of a plan that comes to him through his delusional personal relationship with God.

David Dvorin (Chico, CA) is an Emmy-nominated composer, arranger, performer, and music producer. He has composed music for film, video game, and television projects, and has worked with the Kronos Quartet and renowned composer Terry Riley. He is currently composing for concert works. In addition to his musical activities, David helped develop the education market for eMagic, Inc. (the original developer of Logic) and Apple Computer. A frequent presenter at music technology conferences, David is currently a professor of music composition and electronic music at California State University, Chico.

This is the book you want

This book comes with very nicely prepared Logic files to follow along with almost every chapter. Dvorin covers just about everything that Logic can do at a reasonable pace, and he adds expert advice throughout for speeding up workflow and getting the most out of the DAW.

Note that not much has changed in this book from the previous version, "Logic Pro 9 Advanced Music Production."

It has been a terrible experience!

I bought this book new from Amazon and the access code for the digital content doesn't work! When I enter it, it tells me the code is already in use! If you've used this kind of book before, you know that the digital lesson content is integral part of the learning process. i contacted the publisher and they first tried to tell me that Amazon was who was responsible. They honestly seemed clueless and didn't know what to do except point the finger away from themselves. It has been a terrible experience!
