Very advanced, but the single most advanced book you can buy

The good: If you want to make cakes just like they have at Dalloyau and Fauchon, buy this book. Divided into: fruit cakes, chocolate cakes, tarts, and petit fours. It tells you EVERYTHING there is to know. The pictures are stunningly beautiful, more so than ANY dessert book I have ever gotten, and I have about 12 or so. The desserts are very original - Pierre uses stuff like saffron and violet, and rose, and all sorts of flowers in his mousses for example. Cool combinations: Chocolate mousse/lemon cream chocolate cakes, genoise/raspberry/orange mousse cakes for example. I am not kidding: if you have this book you will know every single decorating technique, every single way of putting together stuff just as they do in the french bakeries. It lists just about every kind of mousse, every cake you could want, which ways to decorate them, and most importantly how to put it together. This is my favorite dessert book.
The bad: You have to know what you are doing already. The explanations are sparse. For instance, the explanations for pastry cream goes like (this is not real but an example) boil milk + vanilla. Add in whisked yolks/cornstarch. Put back on stove at 120C for a few minutes. Cool to 140 F, then put in butter. So the explanations are very sparse. All recipes are made for 2-4 cakes so you have to scale down. Everything is metric, everything is by weights (so you have to know 1 yolk = 20 g, 1 white = 30 g for instance). Gelatin is used in sheets in the book, so don't forget to put in about 1 T water for every 1/2 t of powder you use (if you're american and use gelatin powder) It helps to have "desserts by pierre herme" by Pierre and Dorie greenspan to "convert" back and forth units, since some cakes are in both books. Sometimes you may want to substitute: ie regular genoise for Pierre's genoise, regular puff pastry for Pierre's inverted puff pastry. In these cases it helps to know what you are doing first.
Overall: The best book period, in my opinion. Definitely worth the extra cost - it is worth 3 regular books. You have to know what you are doing first though, not for beginners. Other recommended books in the same French cake style: "desserts by pierre herme" by Herme and greenspan, and "art of the cake" by bugat and somebody else I forget. Both are great books (and a lot easier), though not as great as this one.

Unbelievable !!!!

I have discovered this book after I bought two other ones by Pierre Hermé. I had tried the Pear & Fig Charlotte as well as the Lemon Tart and I wanted to take it to the next level. This book may be made for professionals but I had no problem making the Cinnamon Buns for everybody's enjoyment. Other more sophisticated creations may require special tools but with Pierre's detailed instructions and hints, it is not difficult to replicate what you see on the beautiful pictures.
My next experiment will involve chocolate. I am gathering the necessary equipment to be able to temper, shape and cut chocolate.
I highly recommend this book. It is the first time that a professional really shares his art with the general public. Just try it you'll be amazed !

The Trespasser by Karen Cossey is a well-written modern day mystery adventure story. Logan is the thirteen-year-old foster child of Steve and Abby. He meets Meeka and her rich and famous parents when they stay at a nearby clifftop lodge. When the two families get to know each other, Meeka enjoys sampling "normal" life for a few days. But then Logan, his older foster brothers and sister, and Meeka stumble on a smuggling operation and get caught up in a dramatic and dangerous adventure that includes secret tunnels, rock falls, being abducted and threatened, escape, bike racing, and finding their way out of a fire.

I particularly like children's books that do more than just tell a good, exciting story. The main characters in The Trespasser have all experienced some kind of trauma or difficulty in their young lives and I like the way they are drawn together in friendship and the way these friendships help them move forward in their lives. The past experiences of Cossey's characters reflect reality for many children then, and this does give the book an added element that is special and important and I really liked this.

I loved Meeka's desire to be an ordinary child, away from the fame and riches, and her family's sense of fun and love for each other. Her life contrasts with the pasts of Logan and the other foster children, but there is a similarity in that they all need the security that comes with normality and family love. There is plenty of exciting mystery, adventure and escape from danger as well as the fun of rock climbing, bike racing and family camps on the beach. An enjoyable action and crime story that older children or younger teens are sure to enjoy. - Hilary Hawkes , Readers' Favorite

What a feel good, great read

What a feel good, great read! It has a bit of everything; family, friendship, action, suspense, laugh-out-loud wit, fight scenes, racing cars and more. The story is believable and heart-warming. The relationships are set up well, which helps to support the plausibility of the characters' actions during the crime part of the story. There was just enough action and suspense to keep it really interesting for boys, but I loved reading about the interaction between the young people and them and their parents. It's a great example of what family should be like and it highlights that sometimes family has little to do with blood, but everything to do with commitment, acceptance, and love. The 'significant others' in this book are excellent role models. It should be a funny and exciting read for 9-13 year olds.

Logan Seagate, a foster child, goes exploring and meets a fantastic, playacting family, who turn out to be even more fantastic in real life.
In amongst the fun, they uncover a mystery that needs solving. The story takes many unexpected twists and turns, making it a fast and surprising read. Logan rises to the challenges and finds his life enriched with loyal friendship and family.

What a fabulous find!

I tossed aside a 5 book series which was highly recommended, excellent plot, world building etc, and grabbed this one out of curiosity. Fun Fun Fun! No spoilers here. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment so much that I hardly noticed a few editing "misses", absolutely didn't care.(First for me). Will be on the lookout for the next!

When ten-year-old Winnie Foster stumbles upon the Tuck family's disturbing secret, she is forced to come to terms with her conflicting emotions. She feels drawn to the loving, gentle and rather eccentric Tucks, but what they tell her is too incredible to be believed. Doomed to?or blessed with?eternal life after drinking from a magic spring, the Tuck family tries to make Winnie understand that the terrible magic of the forest spring can never be revealed. The consequences to the world could prove to be disastrous!

But then an unexpected complication arises when Winnie is followed by a stranger who wants to sell the spring water and make a fortune.

Summertime blues, end in a terrific way...

This story is about a young girl who fell in love one summer with a boy who had a secret. Without ruining the whole story for whoever wants to read it, let me just say that this is a great read, and one of those "feel good" stories that you don't want to stop until it is the end. It leads up to a nice ending, and doesn't end how you think it will. Dreams do come true, and when you are a child and in love it never seems to be exciting and interesting. There is a movie about this book, which should be equally as fun to watch, but the book is loads of fun, and so interesting you will want to share it with your friends, family and everyone else.

Tuck Everlasting is the fifth book that my daughter and I have read this summer. It is a winning and thoroughly engaging story that has left both of us talking and thinking.
The main thought of the book is, "would you want to live forever?" Good question! We follow the main character, Winnie, as she tackles this complicated decision.
At the beginning of the story Winnie is a very sheltered and safe little girl (10 years old). She plays in her carefully groomed front yard, watching things around her (including a thirsty toad). Her world is safe, slow, and somnolent - seemingly napping in the hot, dry sun.
The catalyst for change occurs when a man in a yellow suit (no, not hat, you Curious George fans). He is asking questions and seems unduly curious when they (the man and Winnie) hear a strange, almost elfin tune. The man is excited. The girl (Winnie)is motivated to make a surge forward. She runs into the forest where she discovers a young man (Jesse Tuck) drinking from a fountain hidden under stones at the base of a tree. I know, it sounds like a fairy tale. The story does come across as magical. The question is do you believe? Does Winnie believe?
Winnie is taken (kidnapped) back to the Tuck home. The house is hidden deep in the country, secluded and existing in a time of its own. The Tucks move Winnie from her safe life to a different world. Their home is messy and disorganized in contrast to her own neat home. The Tucks are delighted to meet her and treat her like a treasured family member. This also is in contrast to her own more reserved family.
Throughout her time at the Tucks they tell Winnie their story. Does she believe they will live forever? Will she keep their secret? Does Winnie want eternal life?
Different family members present different perspectives to Winnie. Jesse (stuck at about 17) is full of life and is excited by all the world has to offer. The patriarch of the family (simply called Tuck) takes her out to the lake to explain his viewpoint. He points out to Winnie the way the tides of the pond move, all the bugs, and birds, and etc. He explains how everything is born, grows, is in a constant state of flux, and then dies. His family has stopped changing, maturing, growing.
The man in the yellow suit eventually finds Winnie and the Tucks. His plan is to sell the water to "worthy" customers who can afford his hefty price. The matriarch of the family (Mae) kills the man She cannot allow the secret (to her the disaster, the epidemic) to spread to an unsuspecting public. My daughter reminds me too of what a burden this would be to the earth if no one ever died.
Mae is faced with hanging - something which would surely lead to the exposure of her secret. Winnie helps Mae escape. This is a huge departure for her. It is definitely not something she would have done before the Tucks. She is part of their world,their family now. They love each other. The act is not a legal thing to do but is it a moral thing to do? The Tucks have changed her and Winnie is willing, indeed eager, to help. The consequences are grave. Her family is shamed in front of the whole town. When questioned Winnie can only answer that she did it for love. This her mom understands. Her family forms a fortress around her then, protecting her. Winnie comes to recognize their love for her as well.
Before Jesse leaves Winnie for the last time, he gives her a vial of the Spring water. He asks her to think about drinking it when she turns 17 so they can explore all of eternity together. Will she or won't she?
The final scene is of Tuck and Mae arriving back in the main town many years later. Everything has changed. The reader has the sense that the Tucks are getting more and more stretched - like Bilbo in LOTR. Their anchor to life is back 100 years. The longer their bodies live, the less they themselves seem to be part of the living world. The reader eventually finds out if Winnie drank the water or not. The answer makes the Tucks both sad and happy. The answer also leaves the reader questioning her decision and pondering their own reactions. Overall, a very satisfying book.

Five Stars: A book that should be treasured and read time and time again.

Winnie Foster is tired of being cooped up and pampered. She is the only child of the Fosters who live in the "touch me not" cottage at the edge of the small woods. At ten, Winnie wants to see the world. Winnie promises the toad sitting by her gate that tomorrow she will run away to the woods. The next day, Winnie makes good on her promise. As she traverses the small wood, she wonders why she has never bothered to explore them before. Suddenly, a small movement catches her eye. Winnie peers around a large tree and sees a handsome teenager drinking from a small spring. Winnie decides she wants a drink, but Jessie Tuck insists she not drink from that spring. Suddenly, Winnie is tossed on the back of a horse and kidnapped by the Tuck family. They have an unbelievable story to tell her about that small spring. Will Winne protect their secret?

What I Loved:
*Tuck Everlasting is the book that took hold of me and rooted in my soul when read it. I was ten years old when I first met Winnie and the Tucks. Over thirty years later, this small little book and its wonderful characters are still speaking to me. I adore this book! It is one that will always remain on my shelf. It is the book that stirred something inside of me and made me fall in love with gorgeous writing and simple story telling. This is a timeless book that should be read and loved by everyone.
*The writing is absolutely lovely. It is filled with rich descriptions, beautiful metaphors and similes. It is the book that made me fall in love with gorgeous writing.
*The characters are unforgettable. Just like Winnie, I quickly fell in love with the simplistic and kind Tucks. This wonderful little family who are either blessed or cursed to live forever got inside my head. At first, you think it would be wonderful to live forever, but when you hear the melancholy story of the Tucks, you pause and reconsider. There is something so endearing about the kind, sad Angus Tuck. Mae is sweet and motherly, the salt of the earth. Miles with his heartbreak makes me sad, and I truly hope that he finds a way to do something great. Jesse is the boy who stole my heart. I fell in love with this fun,spirited boy. Winnie at ten, is a girl who is wise beyond her years, and I admired her courage. I could go on and on, but I won't. Just read the book.
*The story is simple and yet complex. Beautiful story telling that makes you think and ponder. I am still mulling over the book after all these years. I catch myself often during that first week of August wondering about the Tucks. It is the type of story that gets into your head, your heart and burrows into your soul and it never lets go. In my heart, I hope the Tucks are out there and that they have found their peace.
And The Not So Much:
*My only complaint is that the book is sweet and short and I crave more. I want to know what happened to Winnie after the fall out. How did her life turn out? Did she ever try to find the Tucks? Why did she make the decision she did regarding the water? I wish that there had been more on her.
*I also was sad that in the final pages that there wasn't any mention of Miles and Jesse. How had they fared over all those years? What were they doing?

Tuck Everlasting is the book from my childhood that still speaks to me all these years later. It is a magical, beautiful and haunting story about a girl who encounters a family with a big secret, a family either blessed or cursed with immortality. Leaving you to wonder what would you do if you could live forever? I urge you if you have not read this lovely little book to pick it up and do so. I have it forever on my shelf and I look forward to the day that I can read it to my children.

Susan Tyler Eastman is a professor in the Department of Telecommunications at Indiana University. She earned her BA from the University of California, her MA from San Francisco State University, and her PhD from Bowling Green State University.

Douglas A. Ferguson is Professor and Program Director of the Graduate Certificate Program in the Department of Communication, College of Charleston. He also served as editor-elect of the JOURNAL OF RADIO STUDIES from 2005 through 2008. Dr. Ferguson earned a bachelor's and master's degree from the Ohio State University and his doctorate from Bowling Green State University.

Very Informative!

This textbook provides a thorough overview of the field of broadcast/cable programming. Industry terms are clearly defined and incorporated into the description of the various topics covered. The book is divided into easily identifiable cataegories, which assists in digesting the material.
It's appropriate that a book of this nature start with a discussion of the central theme, in this case programming. That is done quite well in the first chapter. The constraints unique to the broadcasting industry are at the core of the industry and are addressed in that manner.
Audience research is essential to professional program executives doing their work well. That's the topic of the second chapter. Again, industry terminology is explained.
Numerous broadcast experts had their insight to the various issues throughout the book. There is a diversity of perspectives presented. Various organizational structures are included. Radio, television, cable, national, local, and non-profit are all part of the mix. This book is an excellent overview for readers seeking to be introduced to the subject matter.

This book deals with spiritual warfare in a biblical way. The author admits that some of his arguments are reasoned from the Bible and not spelled out exactly in the Bible. It is very riveting reading and a must have for people that deal in spiritual warfare

Shoud Be Required Reading

I own this complete series, and every book is valuable and important, including this one. It has made me understand my place, and Christianity's place in spreading the gospel, as well as why it is so adamantly fought against. On a personal level, it really helps me not to take the rejection of Christ personally, but to continue to pray, pray, pray to battle the forces that attempt to silence the Gospel as I continue to be the Hands and Feet of Christ to those who are perishing. C. Peter Wagner is one of my favorite Christian authors, along with Neil Anderson. I've seen him in person, and he is a very sincere and knowledgeable man.

Although I don't identify 100% as a Christian, I found this book useful and thought provoking; anyone and everyone can use "spiritual protection" "psychic protection" whatever you want to call it. There are dark forces in the world, and it's wise to use all the information you can get to combat it.

Excellently creepy, as I enjoy from Cherie Priest!

This is a very, very creepy tale, of the "possessed building" trope.

It is not altogether clear how cutting down the jacaranda tree- important as it was to the island- caused this evil entity to take up residence- and it's a very specific entity, with precise requirements that to me did not jibe with the history of the tree.

That being said, it's a minor quibble in the face of an excellently creepy novel, that kept me page-turning long after i ought to have been asleep!

The characters are very well-drawn, and feel real. The plot builds and is is very creepy indeed. Not everything gets explained. Although this is in her "Clockwork Century" setting, most of it has little overlap with the rest of the books therein, so this is fine to read even if you've read nothing else in that setting.

That being said, it is closer in length to a novella than a novel, so the price for the physical version is rather high. The production values were excellent, though, and this is one of the few books I've read this year that did not have copy-editing errors- high praise!

Cherie Priest is an awesome author, and this book stands up to the qualities I expect from her works.
This story takes place many years after the main works in the Clockwork Century, with only minor reference to the earlier adventures.
If you have read the Clockwork Century and liked it, then definitely read Jacaranda. If you have read her other works, but not the Clockwork Century, then read Jacaranda anyway--there are no spoilers if you read Jacaranda before the Clockwork Century novels. In feel it is more like her horror than her steam punk.

About the Author
Roger Kremer is a degreed engineer from The Ohio State Unversity. Roger has been implementing Lean (and its predessor TQM) for over 30 years, with 25 years with Eaton Corporation. Roger served on the Lean Council for Eaton Corporation providing valuable insight into corporate wide Lean initiatives. Roger shares his experiences, expertise, and insights in The Lean Primer. Tom Fabrizio has been implementing Lean Systems for more than twenty years. His original Lean training was by leading experts in improvement technologies, including Dr. Shigeo Shingo (co-architect of the Toyota Production System), Dr. Ryuji Fukuda, and experts from Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance. After leaving Productivity in the mid-1990s, Tom co-founded the Healthcare Coalition, whose purpose it was to implement Lean in the medical industry, especially in hospitals and clinics. He later founded Lean Manufacturing Tools. Tom has extensive experience in applying Lean in emergency rooms, operating rooms, patient care facilities, administrative processes, and inventory control. Tom holds an engineering degree from Tufts University, a Masters Degree in Education from Northeastern University, and a Law Degree from England School of Law.

PRIMarily Lean on Job Shop

This book lives up to its Primer status. It does a great job of covering the basics of lean. What it doesn't do well is provide solutions for JOB SHOPS. If you are looking for a book to assist in implementing lean in a custom manufacturing shop, this book does not fit the bill--despite its title. If you want to learn the very basics about lean, then definitely order this book.

LEAN BASICS WITH GREAT EXAMPLES

THE LEAN PRIMER fills a void in the plethera of Lean books in the market. The simple explanation of Lean tools, as well as the actual plant examples, allow you to see these tools in action. What I really like about this book is the photos from shops that you can tell are in the midst of implementing Lean. No staged photos here in this book! Great job in making the bridge from all the other books on the tools and concepts to actual demonstrating it through examples.

A Good Fundamental and Simple Explanation of Lean Tools

The Lean Primer has basic definitions of the major Lean tools. What is unique and why I purchased this book was for the actual photos throughout. The photos provide implementation ideas. Great set of photos for real-time Lean implementation. It is not a long book, but it does cover the basics, as stated, a primer!
