A terrific reference and overview for the guitarist

All of you guitarists who are into home recording (or thinking about it) should check out this book. It is a very broad, comprehensive look at recording. What's different about this book is that rather than being for producers or engineers, this one REALLY IS sharply focused on the guitarist's perspective. It covers every aspect of recording guitar, and while it doesn't go too deep in any one area, it does a GREAT job on zeroing-in on the KEY aspects of each subject (including some of the juicy secrets and tricks).
There's a lot of material covered, but the book's organizational stucture is both brilliantly logical, and simple -- it traces the whole signal path from guitar to the final output media. And the book is so well-written, clear, concise that it also makes a good cover-to-cover read.
There is some material geared toward the professional studio session man that is probably overkill for most of us. But in these cases, this is interesting reading nontheless, and there ARE details in the material you can apply to your own situation. There is also material geared to the "home recording" hobbiest. More importantly, there's a lot of info that ANY guitarist will find valuable in ANY recording situation.
If you're like me and have spent some time in studios and home recording, there's a lot of info here that you probably already know, but what I found was that it contained a LOT of very usful little details that you typically only learn through experience. And it doesn't bog you down with a lot of stuff you won't ever need to know. So if you're new to recording and feel overwhelmed, this is a GREAT place to start--there's a TON of value here.
For me, I found that it reinforces some things I already knew. But since there is SO MUCH to absorb and retain about recording, I don't mind getting that positive reinforcement--it keeps me sharp. But more importantly, I find it fills in some of the gaps and details where I might know something conceptually, but not how to achieve it.
And while there's a lot of "food for thought" there is also plenty stuff of a practical reference nature, like micing techniques, tables of delay settings and artificial harmonics, etc.
Note: The book is more geared toward more traditional guitar recording methods than to plugging a DMA direcly into 4 track. But even if that's your approach, there's a lot of stuff here that's applicable and worth knowing.
Whether you know a lot or a little it's hard to go wrong with this one.

I also appreciated Jon's inclusion of the equipment used by studio guitarist Carl Verheyen. I also loved the section that discusses what effect pedals and amplifiers were used by many guitar greats to get their own "classic and trademark" sounds.(Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, etc.)
The chapter that shows some personal studios of some famous guitarists was neat as were the quotes from these individuals(Alex Liefson). The book also describes how one can make some great digital recordings when away from home or the studio.
If you play guitar and care anything about recording your own music or just love recorded music, this book is a must buy.

About the Author

David K. Eiteman

David K. Eiteman is Professor Emeritus of Finance at the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA. He has also held teaching or research appointments at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Showa Academy of Music (Japan), the National University of Singapore, Dalian University (China), the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration (Finland), University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Bradford (U.K.), Cranfield School of Management (U.K.), and IDEA (Argentina). He is a former president of the International Trade and Finance Association, Society for Economics and Management in China, and Western Finance Association.

 

Professor Eiteman received a B.B.A. (Business Administration) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1952); M.A. (Economics) from the University of California, Berkeley (1956); and a Ph.D. (Finance) from Northwestern University (1959).

 

He has authored or co-authored four books and twenty-nine other publications. His articles have appeared in The Journal of Finance, The International Trade Journal, Financial Analysts Journal, Journal of World Business, Management International, Business Horizons, MSU Business Topics, Public Utilities Fortnightly, and others.

 

Arthur I. Stonehill

Arthur I. Stonehill is a Professor of Finance and International Business, Emeritus, at Oregon State University, where he taught for 24 years (1966-1990). During 1991-1997 he held a split appointment at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Copenhagen Business School. From 1997 to 2001, he continued as a Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has also held teaching or research appointments at the University of California, Berkeley; Cranfield School of Management (U.K.); and the North European Management Institute (Norway). He was a former president of the Academy of International Business, and was a western director of the Financial Management Association.

 

Professor Stonehill received a B.A. (History) from Yale University (1953); an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School (1957); and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley (1965). He was awarded honorary doctorates from the Aarhus School of Business (Denmark, 1989), the Copenhagen Business School (Denmark, 1992), and Lund University (Sweden, 1998).

 

He has authored or co-authored nine books and twenty-five other publications. His articles have appeared in Financial Management, Journal of International Business Studies, California Management Review, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of International Financial Management and Accounting, International Business Review, European Management Journal, The Investment Analyst (U.K.), Nationaløkonomisk Tidskrift (Denmark), Sosialøkonomen (Norway), Journal of Financial Education, and others.

 

Michael H. Moffett

Michael H. Moffett is Continental Grain Professor in Finance at the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University, where he has been since 1994. He also has held teaching or research appointments at Oregon State University (1985-1993); the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1991-1993); the Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C.; the University of Hawaii at Manoa; the Aarhus School of Business (Denmark); the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration (Finland), the International Centre for Public Enterprises (Yugoslavia); and the University of Colorado, Boulder.

 

Professor Moffett received a B.A. (Economics) from the University of Texas at Austin (1977), an M.S. (Resource Economics) from Colorado State University (1979), an M.A. (Economics) from the University of Colorado, Boulder (1983), and Ph.D. (Economics) from the University of Colorado, Boulder (1985).

 

He has authored, co-authored, or contributed to a number of books, articles, case studies, and other publications. He has co-authored two books with Art Stonehill and David Eiteman, Fundamentals of Multinational Finance, and this book, Multinational Business Finance. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Applied Corporate Finance, Journal of International Money and Finance, Journal of International Financial Management and Accounting, Contemporary Policy Issues, Brookings Discussion Papers in International Economics, and others. Awful for kindle

Beware if you are downloading the rented kindle edition. I have 2 pcs running windows, 1 tablet running windows 8, 1 tablet running android, and a kindle and the ONLY thing this book will download onto is my phone. Who in the world wants to read an upper level finance textbook from their phone? Of course, after I discovered this, there was not an option to return the book even though it was 5 minutes after placing the order.

The book was exactly what I needed for my class at a fair rental price. I'm concerned because I've only been using the book for two weeks and the binding is coming apart at no fault of my own. I'm hoping that I won't be penalized for that, as it is obvious that this book has been in many people's hands.

The ruthlessness of the prosecutors and the eagerness of neighbor to testify against neighbor brilliantly illuminate the destructive power of socially sanctioned violence.
 
Written in 1953, The Crucible is a mirror Miller uses to reflect the anti-communist hysteria inspired by Senator Joseph McCarthy's "witch-hunts" in the United States. Within the text itself, Miller contemplates the parallels, writing: "Political opposition...is given an inhumane overlay, which then justifies the abrogation of all normally applied customs of civilized behavior. A political policy is equated with moral right, and opposition to it with diabolical malevolence."

A Moving and Brilliant Play

The play's main narrative line tells the story of the Salem witch hunts which took place in Massachusetts, 1692. At a deeper level, Miller raises several powerful and important questions about human life and morality. But the play's most amazing quality is that it is not "deep" or "philosophical" by traditional standards. Miller has, in a short and easy-to-read manuscript, opened the door (or maybe I should say he presents the reader with a mirror) to modern political life.
The play is essentially a crtique of McCarthyism and the the communist scare of the 1950s. Miller saw the parallels between the witch hunts and the McCarthy trials, and found the witch trials to be a compelling vehicle for discussing modern events. Key themes include:
1. People gaining absolution from the powers-that-be by confessing the sins of others.
2. The power of community rituals, such as confession.
3. The role of political opposition and the consequences of compliance (passive or active).
4. The consequences of a polarized world views and mass hysteria.
These are just a few of the themes. The play is quite clearly a great tragedy, but remains a tragedy for our times. Through characters we can connect with, Miller convincingly shows us that the lessons from the witch hunts still apply. As a reader, I am convinced that Miller's play remains relevant and powerful in the twenty-first century. Miller has left me with questions, regarding world events in 2002 and 2003, that I did not have before reading the play.
I read this play in only a couple hours. It is compelling, engaging, and difficult to put down. Personally, I feel this text stands a great chance of making it onto my "top ten" list of best manuscripts. I highly recommend this play.

Frightening Possibilities

As usual, Arthur Miller was in rare form when he wrote "The Crucilble." Although on the surface it is about the Salem Witch Trials, Miller's true inspiration came from the Red Scare that plagued Hollywood in the middle of the twentieth century (and included his pal Elia Kazan). The fact that Miller wove factual history with the hysteria of his day makes "The Crucible" all the more chilling.

Throughout the course of the play, a collection of teenage girls 'confess' to having seen various women and men of the town of Salem with the devil. This hysteria sweeps over the town as even the authorities fall under the sway of these lying young girls. Caught in the middle of these hysteronics is the Proctor family - John and Elizabeth, who have struggled in the past, but are trying to rebuild their marriage. They are rent apart when Elizabeth is suspected of being a witch. John hopes to clear his wife's name, but only manages to make matters worse for both of them.

The hysteria experienced in Salem is chilling in the fact that these sorts of witch hunts occur today, in all different areas of society. "The Crucible" shows how easily people can be swayed, with the barest of evidence, to believe something that is false. Miller's play is extremely well-written and informative, and almost too frighteningly real.

a great recording

I used this recording this year while teaching "The Crucible". My students loved it!! The emotion conveyed by the cast is SO much better than the typical monotone voice that students use while reading out loud. Even though there were some small parts that are skipped when following along with our textbook, it was completely worth it (and the parts skipped were very small - it was very easy to read it aloud if necessary).
