Nikolay Voutchkov, PE, BCEE, is with Water Globe Consulting, LLC where he provides independent technical advisory services in the desalination field to public utilities and private consulting companies and investors in the U.S.A. and abroad. With more than 30 years of professional experience, 14 as a Board Certified Environmental Engineer, Mr. Voutchkov has completed a wide range of engineering, planning, and applied research projects in the field of desalination, conventional water supply, wastewater treatment, and reuse. Between 1998 and 2009, he was a Chief Technology Officer for Poseidon Resources, a private company specializing in the development of large water infrastructure/desalination projects. Mr. Voutchkov is the author of Desalination Engineering: Planning and Design.

Very good and practical operation manual

Due to our geographical location and climate, in Spain we suffer severe water scarcity and an irregular, unpredictable climate that even reaches desertification in some areas. Therefore we have been dealing water availability with coordinated actions covering surface and subsurface water resources management, water sanitation, water treatment, desalination and reuse.
That means to invest heavily in hydraulic infrastructures which are meant to ensure the necessary water resources, regardless of the weather conditions. Over the last years, desalination has been one of our main investment programmers (12 RO plants with more than 1.000.000 cubic meters per day) as this technology has notably increased its efficiency and competitiveness thanks to technological improvements incorporated within the process and to the international leadership of the Spanish companies in the sector.
But nothing of this would be possible without a sound plant operation knowledge oriented to fulfill our business objectives: Satisfy users' water needs; Maximize operations' efficiency and quality; Prevent the environmental impact of our actions; Contribute to economic growth and environmental improvement of the regions where we operate.
From our experience the book has been a great surprise as it includes comprehensive explanations about all operational aspects of desalination plants, from the first step to the last, covering in one book all the process involved. They are wide, accurate and clear, very easy to read and understand.
The book has a great approach as an Operations and Maintenance Manual, as it is focused on everyday problems. It goes straight to the point avoiding extreme technical or analytical boring expositions. Particularly helpful are the data and ideas shown through the troubleshooting chapters at the end of every topic, including thumb rules and ratios to guide operations in order to avoid problems.
As a suggestion for the more than likely future editions -or future manuals-, we think that main future challenges for desalination plant operation will be focused on minimize costs by improving energy consumption efficiency -at least in countries with high energy costs- and operations oriented to avoid any environmental impact.

In "Desalination Engineering" Mr Voutchkov generously shares his many years of experience in the industry, to create a practical book that is suitable for both seasoned practitioners and newcomers to the desalination industry. The book provides practical guidance that is useful for day-to-day plant operation and facility optimization, and presents the information in a manner that is clear and easy to follow and implement. The book is not limited to any particular aspect of desalination plant operations, but rather covers all key aspects and encompasses treatment facilities most commonly used in desalination plants worldwide - from intake and pretreatment to reverse osmosis separation and post-treatment of the product water.
There are a number of books on the market addressing the planning and design of desalination facilities, but this book is unique. It is a one-of-a-kind compendium of the state-of-the-art in desalination plant operation and maintenance, and is sure to become an invaluable source of information for those involved in the desalination industry.

A must-have for any desalination or reverse osmosis plant

This volume is a must-have for any desalination or reverse osmosis (RO) plant.
From my perspective as Operations Manager of a large scale desalination plant, this eagerly awaited reference text is an important tool for industry and of practical use in all technical aspects of operational activities, from training to process troubleshooting and equipment maintenance. It encompasses the full range of variability in RO plant design and therefore has applicability across industry while complementing its predecessor "Desalination Engineering: Planning and Design".
Voutchkov continues to be a key contributor on an international scale to the dissemination of information in the water industry and in particular the areas of RO and desalination.
